L'objectif de cette recherche est d'identifier les défis de la construction de la paix en RDC. La question est de dégager le pourquoi des échecs des multiples efforts de paix en RDC. La thèse est donc une tentative de réponse aux questions concernant les raisons à la base de la persistance des conflits et les logiques qui se profilent derrière leur naissance, leur développement et leur répétition. Après une première partie, qui traite du concept de paix, la deuxième analyse les conflits et les différents efforts de paix qui, de 2003 à 2013, ont été initiés pour y mettre fin. Elle a permis d'identifier les causes des conflits et des guerres, et établi la différence entre celles qui sont structurelles et celles qui sont conjoncturelles. Elle s'est efforcée de comprendre pourquoi, malgré un engagement soutenu d'acteurs nationaux, régionaux et internationaux, ces initiatives ont récolté des résultats mitigés. La troisième partie explore spécifiquement les prises de position de l'Eglise catholique en RDC durant toute la période étudiée et dégage son analyse des conflits et ses propositions de sortie de crise. Elle contient aussi un chapitre final qui dégage les défits majeurs de la construction de la paix. Ce chapitre propose six axes d'actions pour construire la paix. Il synthétise les conclusions des analyses effectuées. Elles sont résumées ci-dessous. Le premier axe est l'urgence d'édifier la RDC omme état qui fonctionne réellement. Le deuxième est la nécessité de réformer l'armée et les services de sécurité afin de doter le pays d'une armée véritablement nationale et républicaine. Le troisième est de pratiquer une bonne gouvernance des ressourcesnaturelles et minières. Le quatrième est la nécessité de résourdre les conflits locaux. Le cinquième axe est le besoin d'entretenir de bonnes relations avec les pays voisins. Et le derner est la nécessité de promouvoir la culture de la paix qui favorise les valeurs, les attitudes, les comportements, les modes de vie qui rejettent la violence , renonce à la guerre et favorise la culture de la non-violence, le dialogue, le pardon et la réconciliation.
