Pour cerner les espaces du sauvage, l'auteur propose de partir des auteurs chrétiens qui font autorité au haut Moyen Age. La perception de la nature sauvage est une synthèse du savoir antique et de la conception de l'univers présentée par la Bible puis développée par l'exégèse et les commentaires des pères. Cette vision finalement originale se retrouve sous la plume des hagiographes qui mettent en scène le saint dans la nature. Dans leur quête d'élévation spirituelle loin du monde, les ermites et les moines choisissent de se confronter directement à ces "solitudes". Le désert n'est pas forcément conçu comme un lieu de "sauvagerie", et n'est pas si éloigné de la "civilisation". Enfin, les espaces de l'incultum sont mêlés aux terres domestiques dans une perception globale du territoire. Ils se révèlent indispensables économiquement aux faibles comme aux puissants. Ces derniers y expriment, notamment à travers la chasse, des valeurs qui fondent leur domination sur les autres hommes
