"Les frères Wilhelm (1767-1835) et Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) appartiennent à la génération qui eut 20 ans en 1789. Originaires de Tegel, près de Berlin, cosmopolites, polyglottes, ils vécurent en citoyens du monde à Londres, Rome, Paris et Vienne. Ils côtoyèrent les plus grands esprits de leur temps, parmi lesquels Goethe, Mme de Staël, Mme Récamier, Chateaubriand, Arago, Gay-Lussac, Schiller. Ils sont la plus pure incarnation de l'esprit nouveau qui souffle alors sur l'ancien continent et qu'ont créé une mobilité sociale et géographique sans précédent, une transformation profonde des catégories de l'esprit et de la sensibilité, l'espoir d'un monde sans frontières et l'aspiration à être créateurs d'avenir. Les frères Humboldt ont laissé une trace profonde, universelle et toujours présente dans les sciences et les lettres, ils ont défini les bases des sciences humaines d'aujourd'hui et sont à l'origine de sciences nouvelles (anthropologie, géographie, vulcanologie, sciences de l'Antiquité, linguistique). The world is warming up rapidly and this change is most noticeable in mountains with already observable consequences on flora and fauna. This book presents concepts, methodologies and major achievements of recent research in climate change ecology in mountains by placing this research in a historical perspective, that of travelers and naturalists of the Romantic era, and first of all Alexander von Humboldt. There is now a renewed interest, both in academia and beyond, in Humboldt, his writings and his view of nature. But how can we actually make use of his writings?
