Entre la prise d'Alger et l'arrivée de Thiers à la présidence de la république, la France va connaître cinq régimes, trois révolutions, un coup d'état, une guerre extérieure catastrophique et une guerre civile. Pendant la même période, de 1830 à 1871, les Juifs d'Alger vont radicalement changer; ils étaient, avant l'arrivée de la France, des Orientaux persécutés et misérables; ils deviennent après 1871 citoyens d'un pays occidental moderne. De 1830 à 1847; le mouvement de la communauté juive vers la francisation est inspiré par les trois Grands Rabbins indigènes nommés par l'autorité française, Joseph Aboulker, Judas Amar et Jacob Smadja; ce mouvement est immédiat. L'évolution du statut légal des Juifs d'Alger va être très importante. En 1846, le Gouverneur Général Bugeaud nomme Michel Weill Grand Rabbin d'Alger ; cette nomination va inaugurer une série de crises entre d'une part la communauté juive d'Alger, d'autre part le Consistoire Central et le Grand Rabbin Weill. En 1863, sous la pression de l'ensemble de la communauté, le Grand Rabbin Weill est contraint de démissionner. Jusqu'en 1870, la communauté va se manifester en faisant des campagnes de pétitions pour obtenir la naturalisation collective, et en obtenant un consensus unanime des parties en présence. Crémieux, qui est devenu ministre de la justice, promulgue un décret de naturalisation collective le 24 octobre 1870. Le décret Crémieux est attaqué en juillet 1871: Thiers dépose à l'assemblée une loi d'abrogation; il fera volte-face en août. Le décret Thiers Lambrecht, décret d'application du décret Crémieux, donnera définitivement la nationalité française aux Juifs d'Algérie.

This book traces the global, national, and local origins of the conflict between Muslims and Jews in France, challenging the belief that rising anti-Semitism in France is rooted solely in the unfolding crisis in Israel and Palestine. Maud Mandel shows how the conflict in fact emerged from processes internal to French society itself even as it was shaped by affairs elsewhere, particularly in North Africa during the era of decolonization. Mandel examines moments in which conflicts between Muslims and Jews became a matter of concern to French police, the media, and an array of self-appointed spokesmen from both communities: Israel's War of Independence in 1948, France's decolonization of North Africa, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the 1968 student riots, and François Mitterrand's experiments with multiculturalism in the 1980s. She takes an in-depth, on-the-ground look at interethnic relations in Marseille, which is home to the country's largest Muslim and Jewish populations outside of Paris. She reveals how Muslims and Jews in France have related to each other in diverse ways throughout this history--as former residents of French North Africa, as immigrants competing for limited resources, as employers and employees, as victims of racist aggression, as religious minorities in a secularizing state, and as French citizens. In Muslims and Jews in France, Mandel traces the way these multiple, complex interactions have been overshadowed and obscured by a reductionist narrative of Muslim-Jewish polarization.
