« Jean Laloum ne manque ni d'ambitions ni de talents. Il a choisi de traiter un sujet qu'on croyait épuisé, sur lequel nous pensions tout savoir, bref qui, en apparence, ne présentait guère d'originalité. Et il a fait une étude-modèle, ouvert une voie qu'on soupçonnait, sans en deviner les coins et les recoins. Il a défriché un nouveau champ de recherches. Jean Laloum [...] a choisi trois communes de l'Est parisien : Vincennes, Montreuil et Bagnolet. Elles partagent une caractéristique commune. Toutes les trois comptent une communauté juive. Certes, de l'une à l'autre, la composition sociale et les origines varient, mais qu'importe ! Pour l'essentiel, ce sont des Juifs venus d'ailleurs, de Pologne surtout, de Roumanie, de Hongrie, d'Allemagne et d'Autriche, de Russie, de ces pays d'Europe centrale et orientale, dans lesquels l'antisémitisme bat son plein. [...] Entre ces familles, d'origines diverses et de coutumes différentes, les ressemblances existent et l'emportent sur le reste, lorsqu'il s'agit de faire face aux dangers. En ce sens, on peut parler d'un monde juif, même si le pluriel vaudrait mieux que le singulier. Jean Laloum reconstitue cette existence de l'avant-guerre avec une patience infinie, un goût exceptionnel du détail et de la précision. Sa démarche est parfaitement justifiée, puisqu'elle nous fait comprendre l'évolution de ces communautés et leurs transformations à mesure que les années passent. Survient la tragédie. Elle frappe Bagnolet, Vincennes et Montreuil, comme elle frappe Paris, Toulouse et Roanne. Chemin faisant, Jean Laloum illustre, par des exemples précis, les mesures discriminatoires, les rafles, les déportations, puis la Libération. Sur l'aryanisation économique, c'est-à-dire sur la spoliation des biens juifs, il a entrepris une étude qui n'a jamais été faite. Il a dépouillé 494 dossiers, suivi pas à pas la dépossession qui frappe les Juifs. Il fait parler, témoigner et raconter. Puis, il transcrit et, de ce point de vue, donne la parole aux sans-grade, aux oubliés, aux muets de l'histoire. C'est un monde méconnu qui surgit sous nos yeux. Il apporte, en outre, une corbeille de photographies qui, soudainement, donne vie à des hommes et à des femmes qu'on ne voyait pas, qu'on n'entendait pas, qui ressemblaient à des ombres. Marc Bloch écrit que l'historien ressemble à l'ogre de la fable, et qu'il aime la chair fraîche. À sa manière, Jean Laloum est un ogre. Il veut comprendre et faire comprendre. Il veut voir et faire voir. L'émotion, il l'éprouve au fond de lui-même, mais il évite d'y céder. Et pourtant, avec la rigueur de l'historien, il la fait, malgré tout, passer. En mai 1944, Louis Aragon écrivait que le nom de Drancy faisait « frémir les Français les plus impassibles d'apparence ».
