Au cœur du vaste yiddishland, en Litvakie - sur le territoire de l'ancien grand-duché de Lituanie -, s'est développée durant des siècles une civilisation originale, dont se réclamaient plus d'un million et demi de Juifs avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Baltes, Polonais et Biélorussiens, ces Litvaks ou " Juifs lituaniens " affirmaient leur spécificité dans un univers à la fois ouvert sur le monde et intimement attaché aux traditions. Religieux ou laïcs, très souvent engagés sur les plans culturel, linguistique et politique, ils ont compté d'éminentes personnalités, dont certaines ont acquis une stature internationale : Marc Chagall, Sergueï Eisenstein, Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Lipschitz, Golda Meir, Chaïm Soutine, etc. Dans ce livre, les auteurs retracent l'histoire méconnue de cette civilisation : ils montrent comment, à Vilnius, Minsk, Bialystok ou dans les shtetleh, sous l'influence du Gaon de Vilna, les Litvaks ont fortement imprégné le judaïsme dans son ensemble grâce à leurs talents et à leur humanisme. La Litvakie a alors débordé bien au-delà de ses limites " naturelles ". Quelques dizaines de milliers de Litvaks ont survécu aux souffrances et à l'horreur de la Shoah. Mais plus d'un million d'entre eux avaient quitté le " vieux pays " pour perpétuer, sur les cinq continents, une certaine manière de vivre, une éthique exigeante qui les rendait à la fois semblables et différents des autres Juifs. L'originalité de cet ouvrage qui rappelle le destin des Litvaks est d'éclairer la richesse de leur civilisation et de leur héritage, bien vivant, de New York à Melbourne, de Paris au Cap via Tel Aviv.

During his 40-year career, director-producer Anatole Litvak (1902-1974) made films of all genres in Russia, Germany, England, France and the United States. His rootless background was cited by critics lamenting his lack of consistent style, but it also added to his mystique as a chameleon-like realisateur. Litvak directed Hollywood greats like Edward G. Robinson, John Garfield, Kirk Douglas, Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Sophia Loren, Anthony Perkins, Olivia de Havilland, Yul Brynner, Burt Lancaster, Barbara Stanwick and many others. He was twice nominated for Best Director by the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences for The Snake Pit (1948) and for Decision Before Dawn (1951). These films--along with Mayerling (1936), Sorry, Wrong Number (1946) and Anastasia (1956)--are considered classics, but his pictures don't offer many clues about Litvak the man. Apart from passing references to his wartime service as combat documentarian, he never discussed his life in print, allowing only brief interviews relating exclusively to his work. This biography fills that void, providing the first detailed portrait of an artist described by film historian Richard Schickel as "an adept, adaptable and prolific man; the kind of director that Hollywood likes best."

Islamist movements seeking power today are faced with difficult choices regarding strategy, ranging from armed struggle to electoral efforts. An emerging alternative consists of a rethinking of Islamist politics, where the goal of a "totally Islamic" polity would be abandoned in favor of some form of Islamic-oriented society. In this reformulation, Islamist politics would function as a pressure group to make society more Islamic, reinforcing the walls of semi-separate internal communities and reinterpreting Islam in more liberal ways. The September 11, 2001 terror attack on the United States, however, demonstrates that the radical approach remains attractive to many Islamists. Addressing these issues, the contributors look at the countries where Islamist movements have been most important. Case studies of revolutionary and reformist groups are followed by chapters discussing future alternatives for Islamist politics, presenting arguments both advocating and critical of a potential liberal, reformist, interest-group Islamism.
