La reconnaissance de l'importance des livres de photo dans l'histoire de la photographie et de l'art est un phénomène récent. Certaines expositions et publications ont contribué à cette appréciation internationale. Parmi les premières, on trouve " Fotografía Pública / Photography in Print 1919-1939 " au musée national centre d'art Reina Sofia (Madrid, 1999) ou " Open Book from 1978 to the Present " au Hasselblad Center (Goteborg, 2005), ainsi que l'ouvrage en deux volumes The History of Photobooks signé par Martin Parr et Gerry Badger (Phaidon, 2004 et 2006). Quelques livres de photo latino-américains y sont référencés, mais ils sont en réalité peu nombreux. Cela peut s'expliquer par l'absence de monographies et d'expositions sur ce sujet. Cependant, les livres de photos latino-américains ont une histoire longue et remarquable, qui date également des années trente et à laquelle ont participé beaucoup des photographes parmi les plus importants.
