L’étude des positions sociales dans les recherches en Afrique et sur les migrations subsahariennes est relativement concentrée sur les deux extrêmes que sont, d’un côté les populations précaires, de l’autre les élites. Peu d’attention est portée à la multi-référentialité des positions sociales alors que nombre de migrant·e·s se situent à l’intersection de deux espaces de classement et restent attaché·e·s à leur position dans l’espace de départ par des liens et des responsabilités familiales. Ainsi, la position sociale se situe au croisement de plusieurs systèmes de hiérarchies sociales qui s’additionnent à la classe, comme la catégorie statutaire, le lignage, l’âge, le genre ou la race. Certaines variables vont prendre une place de premier plan dans la définition de cette position en migration tel que le statut administratif. Les textes réunis ici proposent une approche dynamique, relationnelle et localisée des positions sociales afin d’appréhender les mobilités sociales des familles africaines avec la migration.

This anthology deals with the complexity, variety and experience of all the forms of mobility we witness today in Sub-Saharan Africa. Three sets of issues are being discussed. First, the concept of mobility itself is considered and how it is conceived of in distinction from sedentarity. Second, which forms of mobility can be distinguished, not only from the perspective of Western social sciences, but also from the perspective of people's own experiences, ideas, notions, etc? Social science in Africa has particularly focused on rural-urban migration, but it is clear that there are many other forms as well. Third, the concept of mobility concerns not only geographical space, but there are other 'spaces' to consider as well. In addition to 'forms of mobility' there is a 'mobility of forms' in which the perception of those other spaces plays a crucial role. In short, the book intends to turn the whole notion of mobility as a supposedly rupturing phenomenon on its head, emphasizing that rather through travelling connections are established and continuity is experienced. We are challenged to delve into the traveller's mind, to think and follow their multi-spatial livelihoods and to explore what it means to people if they move in a variety of spaces.

In the final declaration of their 8th conference, the European ministers responsible for migration affairs committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of migrants, with special attention to gender equality and the rights of women; to strengthening dialogue and co-operation between receiving, transit and origin countries, particularly within Europe; and to promoting coherence at all levels (international, national, regional and local) between migration, development and integration policies. The ministers also agreed to manage economic migration with a view to promoting economic and social progress in receiving, transit and origin countries; to enhance social cohesion by improving the integration of migrants and persons of immigrant background and the re-integration of migrants who return to their countries of origin; and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and persons of immigrant background to development in receiving and origin countries and their involvement in co-development programmes. This report was prepared to support the ministerial debate during the conference. It presents the main aspects and characteristics of migration in the member states of the Council of Europe, analyses policy challenges raised by contemporary migration and identifies an integrated policy agenda.
