Clément d’Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l’un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Son enseignement, tout autant pétri de la Bible que de la pensée grecque, nous révèle la nature des débats aux premières heures de l’expansion du christianisme. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l’Église. C’est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l’Église à partir de l’être et la mission du Logos divin. L’analyse du discours de Clément sur l’Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l’identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement’s discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

Reading Proclus and the Book of Causes, published in three volumes, is a fresh, comprehensive understanding of the history of Neoplatonism from the 9th to the 16th century. Dans une discussion publique qui eut lieu à Éphèse en 531 entre monophysites Sévériens et les orthodoxes, les monophysites produisirent à l’appui de leur manière de voir les œuvres de Denys de l’Aréopage, premier évêque d’Athènes et disciple de Paul. Dieu y est représenté comme l’essence infinie, absolument élevée au-dessus de toute relation et de toute dénomination. Inconnu à lui-même, l’être divin donne la substance à tout ce qui existe ; il est l’essence de toutes choses. Il est donc également vrai de dire qu’aucun nom ne convient à Dieu et que tous les noms lui conviennent. La succession des émanations divines ou la hiérarchie céleste, divisée en trois triades d’anges d’après un passage de saint Paul, nous rend possible le retour en nous présentant les degrés successifs de notre ascension vers le ciel. C’est également dans ce but qu’a été instituée la hiérarchie ecclésiastique, image de la hiérarchie céleste, et divisée en trois triades ecclésiastiques : le diacre, le prêtre, l’évêque. L’âme humaine n’a atteint le but auquel elle est appelée que lorsqu’elle s’est plongée dans les ténèbres où habite celui qui est au-dessus de toutes choses, dans l’abîme de la non-connaissance où s’évanouissent toutes les distinctions, où elle s’unit parfaitement avec celui qu’on ne peut connaître, en le connaissant au delà de toute connaissance.
