Le delta du Sénégal accueille chaque année des centaines de milliers d’oiseaux d’eau. Le visiteur, peu accoutumé à l’identification, ne manquera pas de se poser la question suivante: quel est cet oiseau? Et il n’aura peut-être pas envie d’acheter un ouvrage qui ne va lui servir que quelques jours. L’ornithologue amateur, le garde des parcs nationaux, l’éco-guide, le guide touristique souhaiteront certainement renseigner le visiteur mais la plupart d’entre eux ne disposent pas d’un ouvrage simple qui leur permettrait de le faire. Et certains d’entre eux ne sont pas encore totalement familiarisés avec toutes les espèces de ce riche peuplement. Ce guide n’a pour seule prétention que d’offrir la possibilité – à qui en a besoin – de trouver le nom de l’espèce d’oiseau qui fait l’objet d’une curiosité légitime. Il peut également aider les personnes chargées de dénombrer les oiseaux d’eau à vérifier que l’espèce qu’elles ont sous les yeux est déterminée correctement. Il aborde enfin quelques notions clés sur les techniques de dénombrement. Les textes suivants insistent sur l’utilité de ce petit guide lors des opérations de dénombrement des oiseaux d’eau car il s’agit d’un outil fortement demandé par de nombreux compteurs qui peut également être utilisée par les non spécialistes, et tel est notre objectif. Le Projet RESSOURCE (2017-2020), coordonné par l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO), est une initiative conjointe de plusieurs partenaires techniques qui collaborent avec les autorités nationales et les communautés des cinq pays pilotes pour assurer un environnement durable. Cofinancé par le Fonds français pour l’environnement mondial et par l’Union européenne, le projet est la composante sahélienne du Programme de gestion durable de la faune sauvage (SWM Programme), une initiative de l’Organisation des États d’Afrique, des Caraïbes et du Pacifique (OACPS).
