This volume presents the Proceedings of the International Conference of the WADI project held in Malta, 5-8 November 2008, at the end of the project itself. The WADI project funded by the European Commission, was carried out from 2006 to 2008 by a consortium of researchers from European and Mediterranean countries, and was focused on coastal water bodies, aiming at integrating water management and the needs of all stakeholders. L’Égypte est un pays situé en pleine zone de climat désertique, avec une énorme concentration humaine sur un espace restreint. La densité d’occupation du sol évoque plus les deltas extrême-orientaux de l’Asie des moussons que ceux de l’Afrique ou même de la Méditerranée. Ceci est dû à un miracle géomorphologique spécifique qui a entraîné, au sein d’un plateau massif, la formation de la vallée du Nil, et par là même l’apport, en plein désert, des eaux abondantes des régions inter-tropicales. L’Égypte est ainsi l’un des pays privilégiés de la région du Moyen-Orient pour étudier l’ornithologie, ou simplement observer les oiseaux, qui y trouvent à profusion poissons, batraciens, reptiles, insectes et graines. Cœur du monde, rencontre de trois continents, point intermédiaire entre le nord froid et le sud tropical, l’Égypte constitue donc un environnement idéal pour les oiseaux migrateurs, ou de passage vers l’Afrique tropicale. Les ornithologues ont répertorié près de 479 espèces dans le pays, entre les oiseaux sédentaires (ou résidents), nicheurs, migrateurs hivernants ou de passage ; près de 70 % des espèces sont migratrices. Les espèces décrites dans ce livre sont au nombre de 236, illustrées par 295 photos. Afin de réduire le format du livre et le rendre plus pratique, nous avons inclus des explications, sans photo, pour quelques oiseaux absents de l’Égypte ou seulement de passage. Les deux mots : longueur et envergure sont abrégés en « L » et « E » respectivement. Les noms scientifiques en latin, ainsi que les cris et les chants, sont mentionnés en italique.
