L'ouvrage d'Aylward Shorter, dans un parcours historique à la croisée des XIXe et XXe siècles (1892-1914), nous fait découvrir le développement d'un institut missionnaire voué au continent africain et sa confrontation à l'expansion coloniale : celui des Missionnaires d'Afrique (Pères Blancs). En s'appuyant sur une documentation fouillée et sur une connaissance précise des régions évoquées, l'auteur présente, en un style alerte et dans une rédaction comportant de nombreuses informations inédites, les forces humaines mises en oeuvre pour la mission et les stratégies apostoliques élaborées sur place ou par la direction de l'institut. Son livre couvre une période d'une vingtaine d'années qui correspond à une grande partie du supériorat général de Mgr Livinhac, le premier successeur du fondateur de cet institut, le Cardinal Lavigerie. Période cruciale, comme toutes celles d'après fondation, et qui de surcroît connaîtra l'épreuve de la première guerre mondiale et la mise en place généralisée des pouvoirs coloniaux en Afrique subsaharienne. Passant successivement en revue les étapes majeures du développement de l'institut lui-même et de ses implantations en Afrique - Afrique du Nord et Afrique subsaharienne -, sans oublier l'importante fondation de Jérusalem, l'auteur décrit l'émergence des communauté chrétiennes et des oeuvres de formation dans les missions des Pères Blancs, sans dissimuler les difficultés et parfois les ambiguïtés de ces réalisations. Il nous fait ainsi parcourir une page importante de l'histoire récente du christianisme et de son expansion sur le continent africain. Membre de la Société des Missionnaires d'Afrique (Pères Blancs), Aylward Shorter est connu pour ses nombreuses publications en anthropologie et en histoire. Il a vécu de nombreuses années en Afrique de l'Est, notamment au Kenya où il a enseigné dans divers instituts universitaires. Il est membre de l'équipe de recherches historiques de son institut et son ouvrage se situe dans le cadre d'un projet d'ensemble en trois volumes, pour une études approfondie de l'historie des Missionnaires d'Afrique.

Religion in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo has many faces: from the overflowing seminaries and Marian shrines of the Catholic Church to the Islamic brotherhoods, from the healers of Kimban-guism to the televangelism of the booming Pentecostalist churches in the great cities, from the Orthodox communities of Kasai to the ‘invisible’ Mai Mai warriors in the brousse of Kivu. During the colonial period religion was no less central to people’s lives than it is today. More surprisingly, behind the seemingly smooth facade of missions linked closely to imperial power, faith and worship were already marked by diversity and dynamism, tying the Congo into broader African and global movements. The contributions in this book provide insight into the multifaceted history of the interaction between religion and colonization. The authors outline the institutional political framework, and focus on the challenge that old and new forms of slavery entailed for the missions. The atrocities committed at the time of the Congo Free State became an existential question for young Christian communities. In the Belgian Congo after 1908, more structural forms of colonial violence remained a key issue marking religious experiences. And yet, religion also acted as a bridge. The authors emphasize the role intermediaries such as catechists or medical assistants played in the African “appropriation” of Christianity. They examine the complex interaction with indigenous religious beliefs and practices, and zoom in on the part religions played in the independence movement, as well as on their reaction to independence itself. Coming at a moment when Belgium confronts its colonial past, this volume provides a timely reassessment of religion as a key factor.

In Losing a Kingdom, Gaining the World, Ambrogio A. Caiani explores the epic history of the Roman Catholic Church. Throughout the early modern period, the Pope was a secular prince in central Italy. Catholicism was not merely a religion but also a political force to be reckoned with. After the French Revolution, the Church retreated into a fortress of unreason and denounced almost every aspect of modern life. The Pope proclaimed his infallibility; the cult of the Virgin Mary and her apparitions became articles of faith; the Vatican refused all accommodation with the modern state, until a disastrous series of concordats with fascist states in the 1930s. These dark days threatened the very existence of the Church. But as Catholicism lost its temporal power, it made significant spiritual strides and expanded across continents. Between 1700 and 1903, it lost a kingdom but gained the world. This book examines the relationship between Catholic missionaries and the colonial administration in southeastern Belgian Congo. It challenges the perception that the Church and the state worked seamlessly together. Instead, using the territory of Kongolo as a case study, the book reconfigures their relationship as one of competitive co-dependency. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories, the book argues that both institutions retained distinct agendas that, while coinciding during certain periods, clashed on many occasions. The study begins by outlining the pre-colonial history of southeastern Congo. The second chapter examines how the Church began its encounters with the peoples in Kongolo and the Tanganyika province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Subsequent chapters highlight how missionaries exerted significant influence over the colonial construction of chieftainship and the politics of Congolese decolonization. The book ends in 1962, with the massacre of a number of Holy Ghost Fathers in an event that signaled the beginning of a more Africanized Church in Kongolo. ‘The author gratefully acknowledges support from the Economic and Social Research Council in the completion of this project.’

« Faire ce que Dieu veut », tel est le programme de vie de Mère Marie-Salomé (1847-1930), première Supérieure Générale de la Congrégation des Sœurs Missionnaires de Notre-Dame d’Afrique, initialement fondée par le cardinal Lavigerie (1825-1892). Elle assure cette charge durant quarante-trois ans. Sa foi en Dieu inébranlable, son inlassable charité au service de chacun ont imprégné jusqu'à aujourd'hui la spiritualité et l’apostolat missionnaire de la congrégation. Tout au long de son supériorat, Mère Marie- Salomé initie et organise la fondation de nombreuses missions en Afrique du Nord (Algérie, Tunisie) et en Afrique subsaharienne (Région des Grands Lacs, le long du fleuve Sénégal), insistant sur l’apprentissage des langues et le respect des cultures et traditions. S’ajoutant aux œuvres d’enseignement (écoles, orphelinats, ateliers), de soins donnés aux malades (hôpitaux, dispensaires, léproseries), elle porte une grande attention à l’accueil des esclaves rachetés ou qui ont fui les zones de trafic. Mère Marie-Salomé meurt le 18 octobre 1930 à l’âge de 83 ans à la Maison-Mère de Saint-Charles à Alger. La congrégation poursuit sa mission aujourd’hui dans vingt- huit pays dont quinze en Afrique. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEURE Catherine Marin est historienne des Missions à l’Institut Catholique de Paris, est Déléguée Scientifique à l’Institut d’Histoire des Missions fondé en 2022. Elle a accompagné de nombreux ouvrages consacrés à l’histoire des missions chrétiennes, en particulier, Les écritures de la mission en Extrême-Orient, le choc de l’arrivée (Brepols, 2007), Les soutiens spirituels aux missionnaires et à la mission XVIIe- XXe (Karthala 2016). Se consacrant aujourd’hui à l’histoire des congrégations missionnaires féminines, elle a publié Franciscaines Missionnaires de Marie en France, terre de mission (Saint-Léger éditions, 2021), dans la collection « Femmes en missions chrétiennes » qu’elle dirige.
