Aux Pays-Bas, la traite des Noirs est un sujet sur lequel on n'aime guère s'étendre. En revanche, on se réfère volontiers au " Siècle d'Or ", en oubliant souvent à quel point les deux sont liés. L'intérêt porté à la traite et à l'esclavage est récent, suscité principalement par les revendications de la communauté noire néerlandaise (environ 500 000 personnes). L'auteur, spécialiste de l'expansion européenne, a mené ses recherches, entre autres sources à partir des archives de la Compagnie du commerce de Middelburg, la plus grande société d'armateurs négriers du XVIIIe siècle. Tout en détaillant l'implication active des Néerlandais dans le commerce de l'or et de l'ivoire, puis, à partir du XVIIe siècle, dans la traite des Africains, il n'oublie jamais la tragédie humaine que représente cette page sombre de l'histoire hollandaise. Présentée de manière claire et sobre, son étude aborde les questions pratiques et financières : l'achat des Africains, leur transport dramatique au-delà de l'Atlantique, les maladies, les décès. Il décrit l'organisation de la traite dans le Nouveau Monde. Par ailleurs, il rapporte le débat enflammé qui a eu lieu à propos de la traite et de l'esclavage entre leurs défenseurs et les abolitionnistes. Cet ouvrage sur un sujet encore inconnu devrait être lu par tous ceux qu'intéressent l'histoire coloniale et notamment celle de la traite esclavagiste.

The forced migration of Africans to the Americas through the trnasatlantic slave trade created primary centres of settlement in the Caribbean, Brazil and the United States - the cornerstones of the New World and the black Americas. However, unlike Brazil and the US, the Caribbean did not (and still does not) have the uniformity of a national framework. Instead, the region presents differing situations and social experiences born of the varying colonial systems from which they were developed. Using the Caribbean experience as the focus, Christine Chivallon examins the transatlantic slave trade and slavery as founding events in the identification of a black diaspora experience. The exploration is extended to include the United States to exemplify contrasting situations in slavery-based systems and identifies the links between the expressions of culture emanting from the black populations of the New World and the diversity of interpretations of the cultural identities of the black Americas.Divided into three main parts, The Black Diaspora of the Americas firstly examines the foundation of the black experiences of the New World by considering the slave trade. The second part takes a more theoretical examination of 'black diaspora' using Rastafarianism, Garveyism and Pan-Africanism while referencing the work of a range of thinkers including Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, Richard Price, douard Glissant, Melville Herskovits and Sidney Mintz.
