La Guadeloupe est une région française d'Outre-Mer située dans la mer des Caraïbes. Elle bénéficie d'une flore exceptionnelle de plus de 3 000 espèces végétales dont environ 625 plantes médicinales. L'île doit cette diversité à son climat tropical et à son histoire. En effet, au fil des siècles, des peuples issus de plusieurs continents (Amérique, Europe, Afrique, Asie) ont occupé l'île et y ont introduit des plantes. Les savoirs médicinaux ancestraux de ces différents peuples ont convergé pour donner naissance à une médecine traditionnelle créole. Le dernier mouvement migratoire majeur vers la Guadeloupe a eu lieu après l'abolition de l'esclavage en 1848. Entre 1854 et 1889, environ 40 000 indiens sont arrivés en tant que travailleurs engagés, on les appelait les coolies. Ils ont apporté une civilisation plurimillénaire centrée autour de la spiritualité, de la cuisine et de la médecine traditionnelle. L'objectif de cette thèse est de s'interroger sur l'apport et le rapport de la diaspora indienne aux plantes médicinales en Guadeloupe. A travers une recherche bibliographique et une enquête ethnobotanique de terrain menée en Guadeloupe auprès de 20 personnes (2018-2019), nous explorerons les influences médicinales des indiens avant leur départ du continent asiatique. Ensuite, nous listerons et analyserons les savoirs et usages thérapeutiques. Enfin, nous aborderons l'intérêt pharmacologique et les possibilités de valorisation de cet héritage dans le cadre législatif, notamment par l'application de la phytothérapie ayurvédique aux plantes créoles.
