Figure éminente de la théologie et de la philosophie du XIIIe siècle, saint Thomas d'Aquin est surtout connu pour ses grands ouvrages de synthèse. Cependant, il a aussi laissé de nombreux autres écrits de circonstance qui manifestent son insertion concrète dans l'Eglise et dans la société de son temps. Deux d'entre eux sont présentés, traduits et annotés ici : Les Raisons de la foi et Les Articles de la foi et les Sacrements de l'Eglise. Les Raisons de la foi répondent à la requête d'un missionnaire chrétien qui, en Syrie, se trouve confronté à l'islam et au christianisme oriental. Thomas d'Aquin y précise les principes de méthode que doit observer la prédication missionnaire, puis il présente les grands thèmes de la pensée catholique en expliquant les " raisons " qui permettent de rendre compte de la foi dans les domaines centraux de ce débat missionnaire : Trinité, incarnation et passion du Fils de Dieu, eucharistie, sort des âmes après la mort, prédestination et liberté humaine. Les Articles de la foi et les Sacrements de l'Eglise, adressés à un évêque de Sicile, constituent un abrégé de la foi, une sorte de petit catéchisme avant l'heure. Thomas d'Aquin y expose brièvement chacun des articles du Credo et présente de manière résumée la doctrine des sacrements ainsi que les erreurs qui, dans l'histoire, ont marqué la réflexion en ces matières. Le texte latin est donné en regard de la traduction. Cet opuscule connut une fortune remarquable à la fin du Moyen Age.
