Corbin argues that with few exceptions people living before the eighteenth century knew nothing of the attractions of the coast, the visual delight of the sea, the desire to brave the force of the waves or to feel the coolness of sand against the skin. The image of the ocean in the popular consciousness was coloured by Biblical and mythical recollections of sea monsters, voracious whales, and catastrophic floods. It was perceived as sinister and unchanging, a dark, unfathomable force inspiring horror rather than attraction. These associations of catastrophe and fear in the minds of Europeans intensified the repulsion they felt towards deserted and dismal shores.

« Visages du romantisme anglais » n'est, d'aucune manière, une histoire du mouvement romantique en Angleterre. Sans prétendre à l'exhaustivité, cet ouvrage apporte une série d'éclairages ponctuels sur un certain nombre d'œuvres marquantes d'une époque, qui demeure l'une des plus fécondes et des plus fascinantes de l'histoire littéraire anglaise. Concept difficile à cerner, le romantisme revêt en Grande-Bretagne une spécificité par laquelle il se distingue du romantisme européen. Il n'y a jamais eu, outre-Manche, d’« école » romantique à proprement parler. Tout au plus, relève-t-on certaines constantes, unissant des œuvres et des écrivains dont les particularismes l'emportent toujours sur l'adhésion à des principes d'ordre esthétique. Diversité et pluralisme caractérisent le romantisme anglais. Longtemps tenu pour l'archétype du poète romantique, Byron est plus proche de Pope ou de Fielding, que de Wordsworth ou de Keats. Si Scott et Shelley peuvent, tous deux, être qualifiés d'auteurs romantiques, l'épithète recouvre - dans l'un et l'autre cas - une réalité différente. Cette étude n'est d'ailleurs pas limitée aux seuls grands noms traditionnellement associés au romantisme anglais, mais inclut des figures qui, sans être de tout premier plan, n'en sont pas moins fort représentatives : c'est le cas des auteurs de romans gothiques, ou de poètes aussi différents que John Clare et Robert Southey. Ces essais d'interprétation, d'où l'érudition pure a été bannie, procèdent d'une critique ouverte, qui refuse de s'enfermer dans un système ou une quelconque scolastique. Recourant à une méthode à la fois diachronique et synchronique, Jean Raimond jette - sur les œuvres du romantisme anglais - qu'il nous invite à redécouvrir un regard qui, selon le mot de Starobinski, "sait exiger, tour à tour, le surplomb et l'intimité". Loin d'être démodé, le message spirituel des grands romantiques anglais se révèle, dans notre ère de doute et d'angoisse, d'une portée plus vivifiante que jamais.
