Jean Gallais est professeur émérite à l'université Paris-Sorbonne. Spécialiste du monde tropical, il a acquis au cours d'une longue carrière une connaissance directe et approfondie autant des régions africaines, particulièrement du Sahel et de la Corne de l'Afrique, que de l'Asie et de l'Amérique latine.
