Thinking about development and the environment simultaneously is one of the biggest scientific and societal challenges of the 21st century. Understanding the interactions between biophysical systems and human activities in an era of global change requires overcoming disciplinary divides and opening up new epistemological perspectives. This book explores these challenges using a territorial lens. Combining various scales of analyses (from global to local) and contexts (both urban and rural) in the North and in the South, it analyzes the relationships between environment and development through a variety of geographical objects (i.e. cities, rural and agricultural areas, coastlines, watershed), themes (i.e. ecological transitions, food, energy, transport, agriculture, mining activities) and methodologies (i.e. qualitative and quantitative approaches, modeling, in situ measurements). By engaging in a dialogue between social science and natural science disciplines, within different fields and with a variety of forms of knowledge production, this book provides essential information for understanding and reading the complexity of a globalized world. This book is targeted at academics and students in social sciences and at stakeholders in the field of territorial and environmental management.

Drawing upon thirty years work which took him to Madagascar, New Hebrides, Australia and New Caledonia, Joel Bonnemaison's work presents an original and refreshing alternative to the more traditional Anglo-American approach to cultural geography. Bonnemaison provides a true kind of anthro-geography as he explores questions around the geography of culture and the anthropology of space. With an introduction by John Agnew, Department Chair, Dept. of Geography, UCLA. 'Bonnemaison's perspective is infinitely more interesting than most Anglo-American cultural geography.' - Professor Mike Hefferman, University of Nottingham 'A very stimulating introduction to cultural geography.' - Professor Paul Claval 'The translation into English of Joel Bonnemaison's "La Geographie Culturelle" is a major event. In this gem of a book, Bonnemaison makes a powerful case for an entirely new form of cultural geography that helps us make sense of both Western and non-Western societies.' - Mike Heffernan, Nottingham University.

This book brings together the work of a number of leading specialists of the Fulbe (Fulani, Peul), the largest and most widespread group of pastoralists in West Africa. The collection deals with a wide variety of subjects, ranging from ethnicity and identity, ecology and politics, and social transformation and takes us to such diverse settings across the African continent as urban Nigeria, dryland West and Central Mali, the Aadamaawa plateau in Cameroon, the Guinean highlands, the Ivorian savannah, the Central Sudan, Northern Benin and the Senegal valley. This volume shows that the Fulbe are a fascinating example for the comparative study of social change, and ecological and cultural adaptation by discussing contemporary changes in Fulbe society and the amazing variety of settings in which they are able to survive.
