Für das antike Judentum liegt bislang keine umfassende Geschichte des Lesens vor: Diese Forschungslücke will Jonas Leipziger füllen, indem er anhand der Trias von Rezeptionsakten, Materialität und Schriftgebrauch die Entwicklung von rituellen Lesepraktiken im antiken Judentum nachzeichnet. Er nimmt eine historische Kontextualisierung jüdischer Lesepraktiken vor, indem er deren methodische Grundlagen klärt (I), die Voraussetzungen der Formen von Textrezeption herausarbeitet (II) und die materialen Dimensionen des Lesens (Rollen, Codices; nomina sacra) untersucht (III). In einer historisch differenzierten Darstellung diskutiert er verschiedene soziale Orte von Lesepraktiken (IV) und unterschiedliche Gemeinschaften und ihre spezifischen Praktiken des Lesens (V). Schließlich werden Praktiken der Schriftrezeption dargelegt, die in schrifttragenden Artefakten eine magische Präsenz und inhärente Wirkmächtigkeit sehen (VI). Die Studie zeigt somit auf, wie sich jüdische Lesepraktiken historisch entwickeln, macht eine kontinuierliche jüdische Rezeption der griechischen Bibel – auch in Codex-Form – von der Antike bis in die Neuzeit deutlich und leistet dadurch einen grundlegenden Beitrag für die Erforschung der Geschichte des antiken Judentums.

Die Studie zeichnet ein überraschend neues Bild der griechisch-römischen Lesekultur. Sie untersucht anhand der Leseterminologie, wie Menschen in der Antike ihr eigenes "Lesen" verstanden haben, und bezieht diese Ergebnisse auf die materiellen und sozialgeschichtlichen Zeugnisse über Leseverhalten und -bedingungen. Es werden verbreitete Annahmen widerlegt, z. B. über das grundsätzlich "laute" Lesen, über die Verbreitung einer performativen Vorlesekultur oder über den Gottesdienst als Ort der Erstrezeption neutestamentlicher Schriften. Ein differenziertes Modell zur Beschreibung von Lesepraktiken eröffnet neue Wege für die (historische) Leseforschung auch in anderen Bereichen. Vor allem wird deutlich, dass sich die neutestamentlichen Schriften im Rahmen dieser Lesekultur verstehen lassen und z. T. für die individuell-direkte Lektüre konzipiert wurden. A cross-cultural, comparative view on the transition from a predominant 'culture of handwriting' to a predominant 'culture of print' in the late medieval and early modern periods is provided here, combining research on Christian and Jewish European book culture with findings on East Asian manuscript and print culture. This approach highlights interactions and interdependencies instead of retracing a linear process from the manuscript book to its printed successor. While each chapter is written as a disciplinary study focused on one specific case from the respective field, the volume as a whole allows for transcultural perspectives. It thereby not only focusses on change, but also on simultaneities of manuscript and printing practices as well as on shifts in the perception of media, writing surfaces, and materials: Which values did writers, printers, and readers attribute to the handwritten and printed materials? For which types of texts was handwriting preferred or perceived as suitable? How and under which circumstances could handwritten and printed texts coexist, even within the same document, and which epistemic dynamics emerged from such textual assemblages?

In Ritual Boundaries, Joseph E. Sanzo transforms our understanding of how early Christians experienced religion in lived practice through the study of magical objects, such as amulets and grimoires. Against the prevailing view of late antiquity as a time when only so-called elites were interested in religious and ritual differentiation, the evidence presented here reveals that the desire to distinguish between religious and ritual insiders and outsiders cut across diverse social strata. The magical evidence also offers unique insight into early biblical reception, exposing a textual world in which scriptural reading was multisensory and multitraditional. As they addressed sickness, demonic struggle, and interpersonal conflicts, Mediterranean people thus acted in ways that challenge our conceptual boundaries between Christians and non-Christians; elites and non-elites; and words, materials, and images. Sanzo helps us rethink how early Christians imagined similarity and difference among texts, traditions, groups, and rituals as they went about their daily lives.
