The enigmatic kabbalist Samuel Falk, known as the Ba’al Shem of London, has piqued the curiosity of scholars for generations. Eighteenth-century London was fascinated by Jews, and as a miracle-worker and adventurer, well connected and well read, Falk had much to offer. Interest in the man was further aroused by rumours of his dealings with European aristocrats and other famous characters, as well as with scholars, Freemasons, and Shabbateans, but evidence was scanty. DJohann Georg Hamann (1730-88) was one of the most radical and sophisticated critics of the German Enlightenment. The three late works Konxompax, Metakritik uber den Purismum der Vernunft and Golgatha und Scheblimini!, written between 1779 and 1784, are polemics against iconic texts by the Enlightenment luminaries Lessing, Kant and Mendelssohn. This diverse and rich material, ranging from the Fragmentenstreit to Kant's first Critique, is refracted through Hamann's radical Lutheranism, with freemasonry and the pagan mystery religions adding lurid apocalyptic highlights. Hamann's idiosyncratic style and heavily intertextual manner of composition give his works a fascinating and teasing complexity and put his writing at odds with the period's preferred ideals of ease and elegance. For these reasons, he is a standing provocation to our assumptions about the 18th century.

In this book, T. J. Reed clears the dust away from eighteenth-century Germany, bringing the likes of Kant, Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, and Gotthold Lessing into a coherent and focused beam that shines within European intellectual history and reasserts the important role of Germany’s Enlightenment. Reed looks closely at the arguments, achievements, conflicts, and controversies of these major thinkers and how their development of a lucid and active liberal thinking matured in the late eighteenth century into an imaginative branching that ran through philosophy, theology, literature, historiography, science, and politics.
