Excerpt from Lessons for Beginners in Reading It is not the intention to teach color by the use of this little book. Only such colors have been selected as will cause the least confusion, and as seem to be known by nearly all children of six years. The colors are those which are most abundant in the fall of the year, when children enter school. By the constant repetition of the Old words, and by the introduction of comparatively few new ones, by the use of many short sentences, and a large number of easy lessons, it is believed the children may be able to read fluently before they encounter the difficulties that usually come so early in a First Reader. Three little stories have been included. These may be read to the children to aid in giving them the poetic view of some of the objects mentioned. It is further suggested that the little ones be made familiar with Henry Ward Beecher's beautiful stories of An Anxious Lea and Coming and Going, in Nor wood. There are also to be obtained many beautiful nature poems within the children's comprehension, which will further the same purpose. These lessons are not intended to displace any black board or observation work done by the wide-awake teacher, but rather to supplement such work by providing lessons upon the same subjects as the children have studied. Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading: Primer The subject matter in a beginning text book in reading should touch the child personally and be in keeping with his natural activities if it is to be of value in teaching him to read. It should appear for him in the form of action, rhythm, stories, plays, and games if the symbols of reading are to convey meaning. This Primer has been compiled with the foregoing in mind, the purpose being to offer an easy and natural course in reading for beginners. The vocabulary and subject matter have accordingly been chosen with special reference to the natural activities of children. Children are actors by nature and they therefore perform with pleasure the actions which words suggest. That which a child does involving self-activity makes a deep impression; thus the true meaning of words can be easily impressed upon him. It is, therefore, important that there shall be included in the early lessons a good list of action words which shall form the basis of interesting and thought-inspiring reading lessons and which can be easily demonstrated in class-room practice. The first nine lessons of The Easy Road to Reading Primer consist of simple reading matter compiled from a desirable list of action words. All these early lessons can be dramatized and the meaning of the words can thus be easily taught by having the children perform the actions suggested by them. Lessons 16-32 consist of interesting reading in which the new words are introduced in simple rhymes made up in part from the action words previously learned. These rhymes serve to fix the meaning of the words and sentences in the lessons and make the reading matter more interesting. Lessons 32-38 consist of short rhymes from that classic of childhood literature, Mother Goose. The lessons preserve the integrity of the rhymes, yet introduce a sufficient number of other sentences to emphasize the new words and fix by repetition those already presented. Lessons 38-68 are on nature. This section will be read in the fall of the year when the outside world is full of beauty and attractiveness. Excerpt from The Normal Course in Reading, Primer: First Steps in Reading The effort of learning to read should do much more for the child than to give him power to recognize words and to pronounce sentences and paragraphs. Many valuable features are found in this book that are new in a book of this grade: (1) The matter which the child is to learn to read relates to his home-life, school, and neighborhood experiences. In these the child's interest is at once supreme and aggressive. (2) The matter to be read is the natural expression of childhood. It is adequate and sequential, though nat ural and simple. These characteristics, together with the quotations used, make the book a natural, easy, and rational beginner's book in literature, whose use will inculcate the ha bit of connected, related thought and expression. This, only, is correct language teaching. (3) The narrative character of the book as an entirety will secure and sustain the interest of the child with out forced efiort or resort to fictitious means, for he is born responsive to his social environment. (4) The lessons are such that by their use the motor activities of the child may be employed, and his self-helpfulness easily secured in preparing for and representing the facts given, and in making applications of what is learned: self-entertainment may be made to result in training for discipline and manual dexterity. The artist and the printer have added much to the pedagogical values of the book. The illustrations, explaining and enlarging the meanings of the text, will prove an invaluable aid to the teacher. Excerpt from The Beginner's Reading-Book A first reader should contain a great many very easy lessons, carefully graded, and so arranged as to aid sight and memory, since these powers are the most active in the process of learning to read. The style should be nat ural and simple, yet never in conflict with good English, and the sentences or paragraphs short, such as may be apprehended at a glance before utterance begins. This plan should continue throughout the first year, in order to establish the habit of natural and fluent sight-reading. After a few months' practice, however, long sentences may be read at sight with little effort, if divided into short sec tions at natural pauses, each section occupying a separate line. In such cases the pupils should read each section through as if it were complete in itself, then combine the parts and read the whole. The mind is thus aided to grasp the entire thought without undue effort, and with out confusion. Extensive practice with easy reading is the surest and quickest way of laying the foundation for intelligent sight-reading of a higher grade. Excerpt from The Werner Primer for Beginners in Reading The werner primer is a growth. It is based upon the kindergarten idea as taught by Froebel. According to his teachings, lessons in form and color should precede lessons in general science. The rainbow colors in flowers and fruits, and the sphere, cube and cylinder among type forms, furnish the most simple basis of classification for Observation work. These simple and clear ideas are especially suitable for the subject matter of the first reading lessons. Studies of plant and animal life follow naturally and these are closely related to the literature which is presented in story, song and fable. Again, the lessons put into practice the kindergarten doctrine that the hand helps the brain in acquiring knowledge. A variety Of occupations are pro vided, many of which will aid the child in learning to read and write. This Primer outlines for the teacher's use all the work for the first term or half year including reading, writing, language, number, science, literature and occupations. Full instructions for the teacher's guidance are given in the Suggestions and in the notes. Accompanying each lesson. Excerpt from Lessons for Little Readers It will be observed that to several of the first reading lessons, a spelling lesson also is subjoined. This has been done merely as a sample; and to remind the teacher that the practice of exercising his younger pupils in the orthography of the most prominent words in each lesson, immediately after they have read the same, is attended with much ad vantage, and will be found, in no small degree, to promote their improvement in reading as well as spelling. Excerpt from First Book of Reading Lessons, Vol. 1 Part I. of the First Book may be adapted by the Teacher to any ordinary system of teaching. It is, however, specially intended to be used in the manner described below: - (Section I.) This Section embraces lessons on the letter-forms, and contains eleven lessons. It will be observed that the words employed are either two or three letter words, and that they are invariably arranged so as to form short sentences. These lessons are, in school, chiefly taught by means of a series of Tablets in very large type. (Succession of Steps.) I. The letters at the head of Lesson I. are drawn by the Teacher on the blackboard, or pointed out on the tablet, and the attention of the class carefully directed to their forms and names. II. The first sentence of the lesson is then printed by the Teacher or the blackboard, or pointed out on the tablet, and each word distinctly pronounced by the Teacher, and repeated by the class, until the children can read the sentence as a whole. III. The succeeding sentences are similarly dealt with on the blackboard, or with the tablet. IV. When the pupils can read the sentences as they stand, the Teacher select from the lesson other combinations of words so as to form new sentences, when, if the pupils know the word-forms of the lesson, they can read these without assistance. V. At the close of the lesson the pupils may be required to print on their slates all the letters and words found in the lesson. VI. Each of the first ten lessons is dealt with in a similar manner. The eleventh lesson is by way of recapitulation - containing all the words used in the previous ten lessons. If Lessons I. to X. have been properly mastered, the pupils ought to be able to read Lesson XI. without assistance. Note. - It is of great importance that these lessons should be thoroughly mastered before the pupil proceeds to the Second Section. Excerpt from How to Teach Beginning Reading Games played with candlestick and at blackboard - A candlestick which had been provided for the occasion was brought out and the children played a game of jumping over it, meanwhile becoming more familiar with the rhyme. Miss Hardy then said she knew another way of playing the game in which all could play it at once. The children wondered how it could be done, and the teacher showed them how to represent a candlestick on the blackboard with the chalk and how to show Jack jumping back and forth by curved lines. The children exhibited considerable individuality in their drawings of the candlestick, some adding a little curved handle, others adding the flame with smoke trailing off. They practiced the rhythmic sweeps, back and forth, while reciting the rhyme in unison. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from How to Teach Beginners to Read: Thought Method As reading is the most important subject to the primary child great care should be taken that the best method be employed in presenting it. The main object in teaching reading is to train the child to interpret the thoughts of others and to express them naturally as if they were his own. This is best done by the thought method. The child should never begin to read with less than a sentence. The teaching of words and their meaning, sounds, etc., should be used as a means, only, in getting the thought, never as an end in themselves. As soon as the teacher becomes acquainted with the little folks, the first step is to get them to talk easily and naturally about familiar objects, things they have seen, etc., to answer questions correctly and intelligently and to express themselves in complete and connected sentences. This will not be found a difficult task as the children think in sentences and have talked at home and to their little companions in complete sentences long before they entered school. An attempt, then, by the teacher to teach reading to little children by the a, b, c, word, phonic, or any method that takes from the thought is a great mistake. Some time should be spent in conversational lessons; then from three to four months in development work from the blackboard. The work should be presented in the following order: 1 Object. 2 Spoken thought. 3 Written thought. 4 Recognition of words in sentences and their meaning. 5 Transition from script to print. The lessons to be developed and read by the pupils should always be prepared in advance by the teacher. In preparing these lessons the sentences should be arranged in an orderly sequence; then the blackboard development lessons will train the children to think in an orderly way. Excerpt from The Comprehensive Method, of Teaching Reading This book presents carefully graded lessons for the beginner in reading. The simple stories and rhymes are grouped in divisions that correspond with the divisions of the accompany ing manual. The reading divisions illustrate the phonic facts taught in the corresponding phonic divisions. This does not mean that the reading lessons included under any one division Should be completed as the phonic facts of that division are developed. The phonic drill Should be kept well in advance. The reading of a given division may lap over into the time spent in developing the phonic facts of the next division. Read in this way, each lesson will be a review of the phonic facts already taught. N 0 problem will appear in a read ing lesson that has not been solved in the previous phonic drill. Because the mechanical difficulties of the page are mastered outside of the book in the period devoted to drill, the child's mind, when reading, is free to attend to the thought expressed, and he reads With increasing ease and appreciation. He has at his command more than the vocabulary of this book. He has gained much power to solve the word problems that he meets in supplementary reading.
