Dal 1907 al 1913, Ouspensky scrisse abbastanza regolarmente per un giornale russo, principalmente di affari esteri. Allo stesso tempo, stava lavorando a vari libri basati sull'idea che la nostra coscienza è uno stato incompleto non lontano dal sonno, e anche che la nostra visione tridimensionale dell'universo è inadeguata e incompleta. Sperando che le risposte ad alcune delle domande che aveva posto si sarebbero potute trovare nelle civiltà più antiche, fece un lungo giro dall'Egitto a Ceylon fino in India. Al suo ritorno Ouspensky apprese che la Russia era in guerra. Per un certo periodo, gli eventi imminenti non gli impedirono di tenere conferenze sui suoi viaggi a un pubblico molto vasto a San Pietroburgo e Mosca. Ma nel 1917, mentre la rivoluzione si diffondeva in tutta la Russia, e i bolscevichi stabilivano il loro regno del terrore, Ouspensky viveva in vari quartieri temporanei della Russia meridionale, in condizioni di grande pericolo e disagio. Fino a quando non riuscì a raggiungere la Turchia nel 1920, e coloro che lo circondavano restarono completamente tagliati fuori dal mondo esterno, incapaci di ricevere o inviare notizie anche fino alla città successiva, costantemente in allerta per evitare di essere prelevati e assassinati dai bolscevichi. Nel 1919, Ouspensky trovò in qualche modo la possibilità di inviare una serie di articoli al New Age, che, sotto l'abile direzione di A. R. Orage, era il principale settimanale letterario, artistico e culturale pubblicato in Inghilterra. Questi cinque articoli apparvero in sei puntate come Lettere dalla Russia. Forniscono una descrizione distaccata ma orribile del crollo totale dell'ordine pubblico, e vengono pubblicate qui in italiano per la prima volta. Una caratteristica notevole delle "Lettere" è che, mentre la rivoluzione era in corso e il regime bolscevico non era completamente stabilito, Ouspensky prevedeva con insolita chiarezza l'inevitabilità della tirannia descritta da Solzhenitsyn cinquant'anni dopo. Durante l'inverno del 1919 e la primavera del 1920, C. E. Bechhofer (in seguito noto come Bechhofer Roberts) stava osservando gli eventi in Russia come corrispondente britannico che parlava russo, e aveva precedenti esperienze del paese e della gente.
