This study examines the extant letters written by Christians and provenanced to Oxyrhynchus. Ranging in date from the third through seventh centuries and written primarily in Greek these letters collectively provide an invaluable database from which to consider a number of issues about Christians and Christianity in late antique Oxyrhynchus. In order to compile a database of appropriate letters the first section of this work is devoted to considering methodological issues concerning how letters written by Christians can be identified. In the second section of this study this database is examined to determine what it can reveal about Christian travel and epistolary networking, scriptural and liturgical learning, and Christian naming practises and patterns of piety and devotion. As these letters have never been treated as a whole and have received less attention than the Christian literary fragments from Oxyrhynchus, this study seeks to show how these oft-neglected sources greatly enhance our perspective of ancient Christianity.

With the discovery of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri just over a century ago a number of important texts directly relating to ancient Christianity have come to light. While certain literary texts have received considerable attention in scholarship by comparison the documentary evidence relating to Christianity has received far less attention and remains rather obscure. To help redress this imbalance, and to lend some context to the Christian literary materials, this book examines the extant Christian epistolary remains from Oxyrhynchus between the third and seventh centuries CE. Drawing upon this unique corpus of evidence, which until this point has never been collectively nor systematically treated, this book breaks new ground as it employs the letters to consider various questions relating to Christianity in the Oxyrhynchite. Not only does this lucid study fill a void in scholarship, it also gives a number of insights that have larger implications on Christianity in late antiquity.
