Excerpt from Letters From Illinois Most of these Letters were written to my intimate friends; others are in reply to applications made to me by entire strangers, for advice or information, some directing their inquiries to one point, and some to another. In answering, I generally kept pretty much to the tenor of the questions, as there would have been no end of the labour of communicating to every one, separately, information on every topic; yet, to some or other of my correspondents, I have had occasion to touch on most subjects interesting to an emigrant. Excerpt from Letters From Lexington and the Illinois: Containing a Brief Account of the English Settlement in the Latter Territory, and a Refutation of the Misrepresentations of Mr. Cobbett I trust my friends and acquaintance in England, who interest themselves in our concerns, retain that good opinion of me, as to believe me incapable, from any motive, of laying before them inducements to emigrate to a station, where their existence or comfort would be likely to be threatened by diseases not prevalent in the same degree, at least, as in their own country. Excerpt from Letters From the Illinois, 1820, 1821: Containing an Account of the English Settlement at Albion and Its Vicinity, and a Refutation of Various Misrepresentations, Those More Particularly of Mr. Cobbett Two of the following letters have before appeared in a respectable periodical publication, in which the editor has impartially inserted the communications of writers of different opinions, on the subject of emigration; but as they may be said to be a continuation of former letters, and connected with those now for the hrst time published, I have thought proper to insert them. Excerpt from The Governors Letter-Books, 1818-1834, Vol. 1 The Illinois State Historical Library presents in this volume the first of a new series which will be devoted to the manuscript material illustrating the office of the chief executive of the state. The letter-books here printed are in the office of the secretary of state at Springfield. The rule in printing has been to reproduce faithfully the copies as they were written, as far as the printed page can do so. There has been no attempt, therefore, to correct the spelling or punctuation of the original. In cases of doubt, however, the correct form has been chosen. One important change has been made. The letters were copied in the letter-book as opportunity and fancy dictated, so that order was entirely lacking and in many cases letters were copied twice. We have rearranged the material in chronological order, except in the case of enclosures, and have omitted the second copies, all the more important changes of this character being noticed in the foot notes; and we believe that this will make the volume more useful to students. In closing we wish to make our acknowledgments to Secretary James A. Rose for the courtesies he has extended to us and our assistants, and to Mrs. Jessie Palmer Weber for furnishing the copies of the portraits hat illustrate the volume. Excerpt from Letter to Robert Schuyler, Esq.: President of the Illinois Central Railroad, on the Value of the Public Lands of Illinois The land unsold in Ohio and Indiana is less than would be required to furnish farms of the ordinary extent for one year's natural increase of the population of those States, allowing nothing for emigration. For all practical purposes, therefore, we may regard the public lands of those two States as exhausted, and those of Illinois come into competition only with the four younger States, as yet but sparsely settled, Michigan, Wis consin, Iowa and Missouri. These last four States contain more than one hundred and forty-six millions of acres, of which more than ninety eight millions remain to be disposed of by the General Government. [see Tables A and B. Excerpt from The Graysons: A Story of Illinois I had thought to close up the cycle of my stories of life in the Mississippi Valley with Roxy, which was published in 1878. But when I undertook by request of the alitor to write a short story for The Century Magazine, and to found it on a legendary account of one of President Lincoln's trials, the theme grew on my hands until the present novel was the result. It was written mostly at Nervi, near Genoa, where I could not by any possibility have verified the story I had received about 1867 from one of Lincoln's old neighbors. To have investigated the accuracy of my version of the anec dote would have been, indeed, to fly in the face and eyes of providence, for popular tradition is itself an artist rough hewing a story to the novelist's hands. During the appear ance of this novel in serial form I have received many letters from persons acquainted in one way or another with the actors and sufferers in the events, of which these here related are the ideal counterparts. Some of these letters contain in formation or relate incidents of so much interest that I have it in mind to insert them in an appendix to some later edition.
