Excerpt from Letters From the South, Vol. 1 of 2: Written During an Excursion in the Summer of 1816 Friezlanders; an eleventh, from the Celts; a twelfth, from the Egyptians; a thirteenth, from the Phoenicians; a fifteenth - I beg pardon - a fourteenth, from the Chinese; -a fifteenth, from the Norwegians; a sixteenth, from the Ethiopians; and a seventeenth, from the Anthropophagi! Here is an ancestor for every state in the union, which is enough, in all conscience, to content a reasonable man. But there are at least twenty more papas putting in for little America, which shows how anxious every body was to claim this noble offspring. Each of these supported 'his theory with a pertinacity proportioned to its enor mity; and, perhaps, there never was such a mass of absurdity as has been generated by this sub ject, useless in itself, and now beyond the reach of human research to determine. It was to be hoped that the subject had been laid at rest in the learned lumber of the times, never to be revived. But a philosopher of our own country, whose name may be found in all the newspapers, has lately revived it; and did, what was thought - utterly impossible - produced new ab surdities. Excerpt from Letters From the South, Vol. 2 of 2: Written During an Excursion in the Summer of 1816 I borrowed a fishing-rod from a miller near by, and followed the brook some iniles without catch ing a fish of any kind; either because there were none, or that the little wretches would not come and be caught. 1 was always in hopes of catch ing them, however; and this, Itake it, after all, is the great pleasure of fishing and fowling. Trout do not abound so greatly in the mountain streams to the south, as they do in the north. The chubb, chiven, or knob, as Walton calls him, is common in many places; but the most singular fish in this part of the world is called the stone toter, * whose brow is surmounted with several little sharp horns, by the aid of which he totes small fiat stones from one part of the brook to another more quiet, in order to make a snug little circular inclosure, for his lady to lie in safely. This is truly a most ancient and fishlike gallantry, and right worthy the imitation of all bad hus bands. Excerpt from Letters From and to Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, Vol. 1 of 2 In the selection and arrangement of the letters, very considerable difficulties had to be encountered. By far the greater number were undated, and many presented no references by which the dates might be accurately fixed. Not a few had found their way into covers evidently belonging to other letters, thereby increasing a confusion already chaotic. By exercising considerable pains, it is believed that the exact dates, or at least the closest approximation to them, have been fixed upon. It may be necessary to explain why so large a num ber of letters to Mr Sharpe has been included in the present volumes. Not only did it seem that these letters were of service as the best illustrations of Mr Sharpe's own letters, but that they added not less than those did to our knowledge of him. Living as he did so much in isolation, Mr Sharpe's biography is written in his correspondence, and the interest of most of the letters addressed to him supersedes any need of an apology.
