Excerpt from Letters of Travel From Different Lands The custom of writing a preface to any book which may be sent out into the world, is so universal, that I but follow in the footsteps of others in writing one for mine. These letters have been written at different times, some of them as far back as 1872. A few of them were originally published in the New York World. Many have appeared in the Times-Republican, of Marshalltown, Iowa, the present year. Often written in haste, and under great disadvantages, I do not claim for them great literary merit or descriptions of lands and scenes not often described by others. I have simply aimed to instruct a little, amuse some, and entertain the readers as well. If this little volume pleases my friends and helps to make others, I shall be satisfied. I will dedicate it to Hon. J. L. Williams, Gen. B. A. Beeson, Geo. B. McCord, Tom McElroy, E. H. Hibben, all of Marshalltown, Iowa, and to A. Casteller, banker, of Blair, Nebraska, all of whom have helped bear the financial risk of the publication; also to my wife, Eme Sanford, who, of course, regards this as the most wonderful work of the Nineteenth Century. There are more hills and valleys, and now and then a high ridge by the road side covered with trees like those on the banks of the Hudson. All the rivers here are very small, not wider than our canals, and have not the beautifully wooded banks of ours. The Ayr has a tow path, and is used as a canal. We passed some of the most beautiful little dells with hamlets Situated delightfully on the rising ground. Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours.
