Letters to Margaret is a crossword graphic novel split in two parts, one facing the opposite direction from the other. It is a comic book you can solve, as it is loaded with crossword puzzles of the kind you'd find in the New York Times. As the reader solves the puzzles, the characters comment on the crosswords throughout, and one of the characters gets a few edits from the Times's long-passed editor, Margaret Farrar. The book challenges the reader's perception of what should be in a crossword puzzle, plunging them into the world of cruciverbalism.

From even before the time of her death in 1949, Margaret Mitchell, the petite author of Gone With the Wind, like all instant celebrities, faced the scrutiny of the media. As early as 1936, when Gone With the Wind was published, the celebrity spotlight insisted on giving Miss Mitchell a notoriety she did not cherish, for she was an extremely private person. Credited with many personality characteristics she never had in life, she quickly became something of a legend. After her death, the legend grew by leaps and bounds, and some published accounts of her life so strained the actual events and truth, that Miss Mitchell has emerged as something her friends never knew and would not recognize. She is quoted as saying things to friends which she never said and doing things she never did, given deep-seated psychological motivations which never evidenced themselves in her life. It is the Margaret Mitchell of Atlanta legend which Letters from Margaret hopes to help erase. A highly personal correspondence, the letters were written to the Granberrys as her closest friends outside of Atlanta. They show a person who, as Edwin Granberry said, was "one of the brightest, the most scintillating, and most compassionate spirits we have ever known" ¾ a normal human being interacting with her family, friends, and the world around her as she was increasingly submerged in the fame surrounding Gone With the Wind. The letters reveal no new startling aspects of Margaret's life, but, rather, open a window into the humanity and strength of her character. The letters were kept by Edwin Granberry until his death in 1988, with the instructions that it was important they should see the light of day in order to counter the Margaret Legend, but that this should not be done until Miss Mitchell had been gone for at least 50 years. Now, 52 years after Margaret's death, the letters are being given to the reading public.

New study and edition of the remarkable letter collection of Margaret of Anjou, bringing all her correspondence together in one volume for the first time. 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award Winner Margaret of Anjou remains a figure of controversy. As wife to the weak King Henry VI, she was on the losing side in the first phase of the Wars of the Roses. Yorkist propaganda vilifying Margaret was consolidated by Shakespeare: his portrait of a warlike and vengeful queen - "a tiger's heart wrapped in a woman's hide" - became the widely-accepted view, which up until recently had been little questioned. However, Margaret's letters, collected here in full for the first time, have their own story to tell - and present a rather different picture. In her words and the words of her contemporaries, both friend and foe, they reveal a woman who lived according to the noble standards of her time. She enjoyed the hunt, she practised her faith, and she tried to help or protect those who called upon her for assistance, as was expected of a queen and "good lady". Henry's mental breakdown, the birth of their son and growing tensions among the lords of the land forced her to step outside the life she would have expected to live. This study of Margaret's letters establishes the scope of a late medieval queen's concerns, while providing a unique account of this extraordinary woman. HELEN MAURER and B.M. CRON are both independent scholars; their work has focussed on Margaret of Anjou for many years.

Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673), Duchess of Newcastle and one of the best-known women writers of the her time, is enjoying a revival in the wake of Aphra Behn's canonization: She appears in the Norton Anthology of English Literature, her poetry will appear in a new edition, and Penguin has recently reprinted her science-fiction novel The Blazing World. This is an edition of her hilarious and rowdy letters, unavailable since their original publication in 1664 Margaret Cavendish: Sociable Letters is a window into the world of 17th-century marriage and daily life displaying a pleasing blend of the comic, the ironic, and the serious. Along the way, the author provides us with the first detailed criticism of Shakespeare's plays, which she defends against the Restoration distaste for low characters. She also comments on food, home remedies, the English Civil Wars, religious fanaticism, street entertainers, churchgoing as a way to find a husband, and winter sports This edition offers a full introduction to Cavendish's life and works, a bibliography, and detailed notes, and takes account of hand-corrections made at the author's behest

Often far from home and loved ones, famed anthropologist Margaret Mead was a prolific letterwriter, always honing her writing skills and her ideas. To Cherish the Life of the World presents, for the first time, her personal and professional correspondence, which spanned sixty years. These letters lend insights into Mead's relationships with interconnected circles of family, friends, and colleagues, and reveal her thoughts on the nature of these relationships. In these letters -- drawn primarily from her papers at the Library of Congress -- Mead ruminates on family, friendships, sexuality, marriage, children, and career. In midlife, at a low point, she wrote to a friend, "What I seem to need most is close, aware human relationships, which somehow reinstate my sense of myself, as no longer living 'in the season of the narrow heart." This collection is structured around these relationships, which were so integral to Mead's perspective on life. With a foreword by her daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson, a renowned author and anthropologist in her own right, this volume of letters from Mead to those who shared her life and work offers new insight into a rich and deeply complex mind.
