Nel 1641 comparvero le Meditationes de prima philosophia, di cui nel 1647 fu pubblicata anche una traduzione in francese riveduta dall’autore. Questa è l’opera cartesiana dedicata esclusivamente alla metafisica, e in essa sono ampiamente trattate tutte le questioni concernenti il fondamento della verità e della certezza, l’anima, Dio, l’essenza e l’esistenza delle cose materiali, la distinzione dell’anima dal corpo. Il manoscritto delle Meditazioni era stato consegnato al Mersenne, fedele amico del filosofo, già nel 1640 e ciò rese possibile che un’ampia discussione sulle diverse teorie contenute nell’opera sorgesse, prima della pubblicazione, tra l’autore e dotti pensatori suoi contemporanei, tra i quali Hobbes, Arnauld, Gassendi. Le Obiezioni di questi ultimi e le Risposte del filosofo furono pubblicate in una voluminosa appendice insieme con le Meditazioni.
