The third international workshop on leucocyte typing antigens reports the results of collaborative experiments involving over 800 antibodies. This volume contains the first and only complete account of the experiments and the subsequent analyses, which produced a careful description of fifty human leucocyte antigens, twenty-four of them fully characterized for the first time. Antigens specific for or shared by T-Cells, B-Cells, activated lymphocytes, myeloid cells and platelets are featured. The papers detail their distribution, molecular structure and function, and discuss the role that the antigens may play in investigating and understanding pathological processes, particularly in leukemias and lymphomas.

The Second International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentia- tion Antigens was held in Boston, September 17-20, 1984. More than 350 people interested in leukocyte differentiation agreed to exchange reagents and participate in this joint venture. All in all, in excess of 400 antibodies directed against surface structures on T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and myeloid-hematopoietic stem cells were characterized. Because of the enormous quantity of serologic, biochemical, and functional data, Leuko- cyte Typing II has been divided into three volumes. These books represent the written results of workshop participants. They should be helpful to both researchers and clinicians involved in scientific endeavors dealing with these broad fields of immunobiology. To those who delve into the various sections of the volumes, it will become evident that the work speaks for itself. I am deeply indebted to the section editors, Barton F. Haynes, Volume 1, Human T Lymphocytes, Lee M. Nadler, Volume 2, Human B Lympho- cytes, and Irwin D.Bernstein, Volume 3, Human Myeloid and Hemato- poietic Cells for their major contributions in planning, executing, and summarizing the workshop, as well as council members John Hansen, Alain Bernard, Laurence Boumsell, Walter Knapp, Andrew McMichael, Cesar Milstein, and Stuart F. Schlossman. I would also like to thank the National Institutes of Health, World Health Organization, and Interna- tional Union of Immunological Societies for making this meeting possible.

This book describes the state of the art of monoclonal antibodies that react with molecules on the surface of human leucocytes, platelets, or enothelial cells, and will be a key source of information describing the present state of our knowledge of human leucocyte differentation antigens. The fifth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens was held in Boston on November 3-7, 1993. Those present at the meeting represented the efforts of more than 500 laboratories worldwide who joined together over a two year period to analyze 1450 antibodies and characterize over 150 molecules. Blind panels for all monoclonal antibodies including every CD, every noncandidate for CD status and all monoclonals of undefined specificity were analyzed by flow cytometry. Other dedicated laboratories undertook serologic molecular, biochemical, histochemical characterization of the monoclonal antibodies and structures they defined. The results obtained in Boston are detailed in this two volume set. Special emphasis is given in the book to the description and characterization of 48 new CD clusters and subclusters and the redefinition of 14 previously defined established clusters.

Health care policy and proposals for national health care reform have become some of the most contentious political issues of the decade. Garland Publishing announces a new series addressing the most significant issues in the area of health care policy and the business of health care in the United States. books in this multidisciplinary series will include studies of health care practice, the health care business, the implications of multicultural perspectives on health care for public policy, the impact of insurance on health care, and debates over national health care policy, including health care reform. This collection of timely works will offer significant scholarly perspectives on one of the most important issues in public policy. This definitive up-to-date reference on leucocyte surface antigens offers details on 41 newly defined CD antigens and summaries of recent research on all the known CD antigens, collated at the Sixth International workshop and Conference on Human Leucucyte Differentiation antigens. New in this volume are summary diagrams for each CD antigen that show at a glance the main features of structure, function, tissue distribution, and the chromosomal location of the gene, and a separate CD Guide in numerical order, summarizing key features of each antigen.

The function of human white cells is dependent on a complex machinery involving a network of proteins. Their identification has posed a puzzle for scientists for many years and this book comprises the proceedings of the latest in a series of international meetings that have identified many ofthese entities and studied their function and clinical importance. Leucocyte Typing VII provides the definitive reference for all those working with antibodies recognising marker molecules on white blood cells. Sorting and tracing white blood cells is important in a range of clinical settings, butespecially in the diagnosis of leukaemias. There is a concerted action by regulatory bodies looking for a standard against which these 'biologicals' can be assessed. The book contains the assembled work of many laboratories worldwide which jointly evaluated many hundered different monoclonalantibodies. The results of the collaborative effort reported at the meeting are published in Leucocyte Typing VII. A unique feature of this book is the complete guide to all available CD- antigens. This book is the standard reference for immunologists, cell and molecular biologists, haematologists, and pathologists working on white cell differentiation. It provides immunologists and biochemists with an up to date summary of the current knowledge of molecular aspects of different categories of human white cells (and endothelial and red cells) and provides hematologists andoncologists with information relevant to their clinical practice and research.
