In this book literary interior monologue is considered in relation to extraliterary phenomena, as well as narrative theory. The central question posed by this study is: what makes a particular interior monologue believable, given the unobservable nature of human thought? The discussion revolves around the unobservable counterpart of literary interior monologue, i.e., what is known in psychology as inner speech. Taking various experimental findings and theories from Soviet and American research on inner speech, the author compares them with literary interior monologue and tries to account for similarities and differences. Examples of literary interior monologue are analyzed in comparison with data from the linguistic study of real oral spontaneous discourse (also known as face-to-face communication). In the context of this interdisciplinary framework four examples of literary interior monologue are considered: V.M. Garshin's Four Days (1877), E. Dujardin's Les Lauriers sont coupés (1887), A Schnitzler's Leutnant Gustl (1900) and V. Larbaud's Amants, heureux amants... (1921). The inclusion of data from psychology and research on face-to-face communication makes a unique contribution not only to narrative theory, but also to the understanding of the relationship between literary and extraliterary communication.

Juli schrieb Arthur Schnitzler während eines Urlaubs im Kurhaus von Reichenau die Novelle "Lieutenant Gustl". Nach einem Konzert wird Leutnant Gustl von dem Bäcker Habetswallner beleidigt. Da dieser satisfaktionsunfähig ist, bleibt Gustl nach dem Ehrenkodex des Militärs nur die Wahl mit Schimpf und Schande seinen Dienst zu quittieren oder sich umzubringen. Er beschließt sich am nächsten Morgen zu erschießen. Bis dahin wandert er durch die Straßen Wiens und denkt über sein Leben, seine Situation und mögliche Auswege nach. Als er morgens vor dem Selbstmord etwas frühstücken will, erfährt er im Kaffeehaus, dass den Bäcker der Schlag getroffen hat. Da niemand etwas von der Beleidigung mitbekommen hat, wirft Gustl den Ehrenkodex erleichtert über den Haufen und beschließt weiterzuleben, als sei nichts geschehen. Die Novelle erschien am 25.12.1900 als Beilage in der Weihnachtsausgabe der "Neuen freien Presse". Sie war zu dieser Zeit hochaktuell und hatte großen Erfolg. Aber ihre Inhalte führten zu starken Kontroversen und kosteten ihren Autor das Offizierspatent. Weshalb war die Empörung über diesen Text so groß, dass noch 1962 ein böser Artikel deswegen über Arthur Schnitzler im ""Nachrichtenblatt Alt-Österreichs" erschien? Und welches Nachspiel hatte die Veröffentlichung der Novelle für ihren Autor?

Armee geschädigt und herabgesetzt wurde." (Wien, am 26. April 1901) Angesichts dieser schwerwiegenden Vorwürfe, die den Begriff "Ehre" ausdrücklich betonen, liegt es nahe zu fragen, wodurch nun eigentlich dieses Ärgernis ausgelöst wurde. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, wird in Kapitel II zunächst versucht, die Auffassung und Handhabung von "Ehre" durch den Protagonisten der Erzählung nachzuzeichnen. Daraufhin untersucht Kapitel III, ob sich der Leutnant als würdiger Vertreter der "Standesehre" erweist, um die Relation zwischen Ideal und Realität einschätzen zu können. Abschließend erläutert Kapitel IV einige Methoden und mögliche Intentionen des Autors in Bezug auf zeitgenössische, reale Parallelen zum Image des Leutnant Gustl.

Er gerät in eine Lage, die es ihm nicht ermöglicht diesen Konflikt wie bisher gewohnt zu lösen. Bei L.G. handelt es sich um einen Mann, der bisher, bestimmt durch seine Militärlaufbahn und deren engumrissene Regeln und Normen, gewohnt war, Konflikte in einem vorgegebenen Kontext und mit für alle verbindlichen Mitteln, wie z.B. das Duell bei Ehrverletzungen, auszutragen. Außerhalb seiner gewohnten Normen und vorgegebenen Richtungen ist er nicht in der Lage eine für ihn kritische Situation zu bestehen. Die logische Konsequenz dieser Unfähigkeit ist, dass er die einzige Möglichkeit seine Militärsehre zu retten darin sieht, sich selbst zu töten. An strenge Ordnung gewöhnt, plant L.G. auch seinen Selbstmord penibel genau und legt auf die Minute den Zeitpunkt für seinen Freitod fest. Der Leser hat während der Zeit des Wartens die Gelegenheit, L.Gs. Gedankengänge mitzuverfolgen. Dabei erkennt man, dass L.G. sich nicht nur im Rahmen seiner Normen und Regeln bewegt, sondern gleichermaßen triebhafte Kognitionen hat, die sich fast ausschließlich auf Frauen und sexuelle Gelüste beziehen. In meiner Arbeit möchte ich verdeutlichen, dass es sich bei L.G. um einen eher fragwürdigen Helden handelt, der eigentlich nie authentisch ist, weil er sich ausschließlich an den vorgegebenen Normen und Richtlinien orientiert. Er knüpft seine Ansichten und Lebenseinstellungen an die seiner Kameraden und Vorgesetzten und der äußere Schein und Status sind
