Long ago, all the kingdoms of the Earth gave up their magic. Except for one. Instead, that one kingdom agreed to remove itself from the rest by moving deep underneath the sea. That kingdom is called Atlantis. Now Sally's mother is trapped down in Atlantis and Levi, Sally, and Brian are on their way to free her. This book is perfect for parents to read aloud to their children. Like the rest of the "Levi and His Magic Pants" series, it is designed to make a great "first chapter book" experience.

It is well known that Richard Wagner, the renowned and controversial 19th century composer, exhibited intense anti-Semitism. The evidence is everywhere in his writings as well as in conversations his second wife recorded in her diaries. In his infamous essay "Judaism in Music," Wagner forever cemented his unpleasant reputation with his assertion that Jews were incapable of either creating or appreciating great art. Wagner's close ties with many talented Jews, then, are surprising. Most writers have dismissed these connections as cynical manipulations and rank hypocrisy. Examination of the original sources, however, reveals something different: unmistakeable, undeniable empathy and friendship between Wagner and the Jews in his life. Indeed, the composer had warm relationships with numerous individual Jews. Two of them resided frequently over extended periods in his home. One of these, the rabbi's son Hermann Levi, conducted Wagner's final opera--Parsifal, based on Christian legend--at Wagner's request; no one, Wagner declared, understood his work so well. Even in death his Jewish friends were by his side; two were among his twelve pallbearers. The contradictions between Wagner's antipathy toward the amorphous entity "The Jews" and his genuine friendships with individual Jews are the subject of this book. Drawing on extensive sources in both German and English, including Wagner's autobiography and diary and the diaries of his second wife, this comprehensive treatment of Wagner's anti-Semitism is the first to place it in perspective with his life and work. Included in the text are portions of unpublished letters exchanged between Wagner and Hermann Levi. Altogether, the book reveals astonishing complexities in a man long known as much for his prejudice as for his epic contributions to opera.

Conducting The Brahms Symphonies written by Christopher Dyment and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Music categories.

How did Brahms conduct his four symphonies? What did he want from other conductors when they performed these works, and to which among them did he give his approval? And crucially, are there any stylistic pointers to these performances in early recordings of the symphonies made in the first half of the twentieth century? For the first time, Christopher Dyment provides a comprehensive and in-depth answer to these important issues. Drawing together thestrands of existing research with extensive new material from a wide range of sources - the views of musicians, contemporary journals, memoirs, biographies and other critical literature - Dyment presents a vivid picture of historic performance practice in Brahms's era and the half-century that followed. Here is a remarkable panorama showcasing Brahms himself conducting, together with those conductors whom he heard, among them Levi, Richter, Nikisch, Weingartner and Fritz Steinbach, and their disciples, such as Toscanini, Stokowski, Boult and Fritz Busch. Here, too, are other famed Brahms conductors of the early twentieth century, including Furtwängler and Abendroth, whose connections with the Brahms tradition are closely examined. Dyment then analyses recordings of the symphonies by these conductors and highlights aspects which the composer might well have commended. Finally, Dyment suggests the importanceof his conclusions for those contemporary conductors who are currently attempting to rediscover genuine performance traditions in their own re-creations of the symphonies. This major study is complemented with forty photographs and a frontispiece. It is sure to fascinate musicians, Brahms enthusiasts and those interested in the history of recorded music. CHRISTOPHER DYMENT is author of Felix Weingartner: Recollections and Recordings(Triad Press 1976) and Toscanini in Britain (The Boydell Press 2012). He has published many articles about historic conductors over the last forty years.

Tom Sleigh’s brilliant new collection is “full of the wonder and eloquence driving profound poetry” (Los Angeles Times) You’ve got to put your pants on in the house of fact. And in the house of fact, when you take off your shirt, you can hear your shirt cry out, Facts are the floor, facts are how you make the right side talk to the left. I’m washing my naked belly clean, and doing it with dignity. I’m turning around, trying to see the filthiness that keeps making me filthy. —from “House of Fact, House of Ruin” “I hate to admit it, but even the house of fact is a house of ruin,” writes Tom Sleigh in the title sequence of this extraordinary new collection. Very much of our present moment, in which fact can so easily be manufactured and ruin so easily achieved by pressing "Send" or pulling a trigger, these poems range across the landscapes of contemporary experience. Whether a militia in Libya or a military base in Baghdad, a shantytown in East Africa or an opulent mall on Long Island, these subjects and locations resonate with the psychic and social costs of having let the genie of war, famine, and climate change out of the lamp in the first place. The book ultimately turns on conundrums of selfhood and self-estrangement in which Sleigh urges us toward a different realm, where we might achieve the freedom of spirit to step outside our own circumstances, however imperfectly, and look at ourselves as other, as unfamiliar, as strange. House of Fact, House of Ruin is Sleigh’s most engaging and virtuosic collection to date.

The author of the Yancy Lazarus series introduces a golem forged from the ashes of WWII in “a dark tale of vengeance and redemption” (Domino Finn, author of the Black Magic Outlaw series). Levi Adams is a soft-spoken, middle-aged Mennonite man—at least he tries to be when he’s not murdering people. Levi’s a golem, a Mudman, crafted from the muck, mire, and corpses of a World War II concentration camp and saddled with a divine commission to dole out judgment on those who shed innocent blood. But now, after seventy years as a cold-blooded murder machine, he’s turned to AA meetings and church services to help change his grisly nature. Until he runs across a wounded girl, Sally Ryder, during one of his “hunting expeditions.” Someone is attempting to revive a pre-Babylonian murder god, and the road to rebirth is paved with dead bodies. Lots and lots of them. Now, Levi must protect Sally—the key to an unspeakable resurrection—and defeat a Nazi mage from his murky past, one who holds a terrible secret about the Mudman’s unorthodox birth. It’s a secret Levi would pay anything to uncover: maybe even Sally’s life. If Levi isn’t careful, he may end up turning into the monster he always imagined himself to be. “A timeless tale of striving against evil . . . Highly recommended if you like paranormal thrillers, psychological thrillers and books such as Jeff Lindsey’s Dexter Morgan series, Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter books, the TV show Supernatural.” —Port Jericho “A mash of styles and creative ideas, blending religious mythology from Jewish and Christian beliefs alongside Nazi atrocities and supernatural ghouls.” —TheBookBeard’s Blog
