It was the biggest sailing vessel ever built and the worlds first supertanker. In the winter of 1907, the T.W. Lawson, a four-hundred foot schooner with seven masts, makes her first transatlantic crossing with more than two million gallons of kerosene to be delivered to London. With almost fifty years of sailing experience, Captain George W. Dow is not intimidated, despite the Lawsons checkered history. But hurricane winds and an angry sea conspire to defeat man and machine. Bereft of her sails, the giant ship is trapped in treacherous shoals off the southwest coast of Britain. Seventeen lives are lost, including a local pilot trying to avert disaster. Now, Captain Dow is called to accountmost especially to himself. Leviathans Master is a true story, transformed into a gripping historical novella by the captains great, great nephew. The tale of the largest sailing vessels ocean crossing is compelling at a very human level. The author weaves the survival tale of his great, great uncle with dialogue and descriptive historical facts to create a story that ebbs and flows as waves on an ocean. It is engaging and intriguing to be brought back in time for such an event, in such a personal way. Leviathans Master is a highly recommended read.... It is gripping. Lisa Haselton, Allbooks Reviews. Leviathan After 350 Years written by Tom Sorell and has been published by Clarendon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-02-12 with Philosophy categories.

Tom Sorell and Luc Foisneau bring together original essays by the world's leading Hobbes scholars to discuss Hobbes's masterpiece after three and a half centuries. The contributors address three different themes. The first is the place of Leviathan within Hobbes's output as a political philosopher. What does Leviathan add to The Elements of Law (1640) and De Cive (1642; 1647)? What is the relation between the English Leviathan and the Latin version of the book (1668)? Does Leviathan deserve its pre-eminence? The second theme concerns the connections between Hobbes's psychology and Hobbes's politics. The essays discuss Hobbes's curious views on the significance of laughter, evidence that he connected life in the state with passionlessness; the ways in which such things as fear for one's life entitle subjects to rebel; and the question of how the sovereign's personal passions are to be squared with his personifying a multitude. The third theme is Hobbes's views on the Bible and the Church: contributors examine the tensions between any allowance for ecclesiastical and (differently) biblical authority on the one hand, and political authority on the other. This is a book which anyone working on Hobbes or on this period of intellectual history will want to read.

Liberty: God's Gift to Humanity is a defense of liberalism, the political philosophy which holds that governments should be established for the protection of individual liberty. By means of revisiting the thinking of the men who created liberal theory over the past three centuries, author Chana Cox has demonstrated that historically the bond between liberalism and religion has been strong and that liberals have embraced virtue, encouraged social control, and increased the common good.

Back before the world was formed, there were three beasts: the Ice Wolf, the Fire Lion, and the Darkness Dragon. They were coined as the Beasts of Destruction. The beasts were only soldiers to the real evil, the monster that devours all. The first Felgrand paladin sealed these beasts in a giant stone slab. Many years have passed since then, and the Beasts of Destruction marks were placed on three chosen individuals to stop the monster that devours all from being released. This story follows Kalin Kurosaki, a young ice master who is still trying to find his way in the world. One day, his brother, Kai, went on a search of the monster that devours all. Kalin now must go on a journey on his own to save his bother. Along with his journey, he will meet powerful allies that will help him and sinister enemies that will test his resolve and his ability as an ice master. Does Kalin have what it takes to overcome these obstacles and save his brother and become his country’s next Felgrand paladin?

The Quality Of Freedom written by Matthew H. Kramer and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-29 with Political Science categories.

At least since the publication of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay "Two Concepts of Liberty" nearly half a century ago, political philosophers have argued vigorously over the relative merits of "positive" and "negative" accounts of freedom. Matthew Kramer writes squarely within the negative-liberty tradition, but he incorporates a number of ideas that are quite often associated with theories of positive liberty. Much of The Quality of Freedom is devoted to elaborating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of particular freedoms and unfreedoms; however, the book's cardinal objective is to establish the measurability of each person's overall freedom and of each society's aggregate freedom. On the one hand, Kramer contends that the existence of any particular instance of liberty or unfreedom is a matter of fact that can be confirmed or disconfirmed without any reliance on evaluative or normative considerations. On the other hand, he argues that the extent of each person's overall freedom or unfreedom cannot be ascertained entirely in the absence of evaluative assumptions. By combining those two positions and developing them in detail, Kramer pits himself against all positive accounts of liberty and most negative accounts. In the course of so doing, he aims to demonstrate the rigorous measurability of overall liberty - something that many writers on freedom have casually dismissed as impossible. Although Kramer concentrates principally on constructing a systematic analysis of sociopolitical freedom, he engages critically with the work of many of the leading contemporary writers on the topic.
