Mitchell C. Brown presents a short biographical sketch about the African-American inventor Lewis Howard Latimer (1848-1928), as part of the Faces of Science: African-Americans in the Sciences. Latimer improved upon the light bulb by creating a light bulb with a filament made of carbon. He wrote the book entitled "Incandescent Electric Lighting," published in 1890, and developed a water closet for railroad cars, as well as a type of air conditioner.
