The story of God's people in the Bible is set in a particular place and at a particular time. It is linked to the land: The land you are crossing [the Jordan] to occupy is a land of hills and valleys, watered by rain from the sky, a land that the Lord your God looks after. (Deuteronomy 11:11-12). The Bible is full of journeys. Abraham took an epic journey from his father's home in Ur to the land of Canaan. The Hebrews journeyed from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. The kingdom of Israel expanded under King David. Later the Jews were taken into exile in distant Babylon and Persia. Jesus journeyed around Galilee and Judea, while Paul took an epic series of missionary journeys throughout the Mediterranean world. It is very helpful to have maps to show where these places were, and where the journeys led. This atlas provides a clear set of annotated maps offering an accessible background to the Bible story. Tim Dowley, A companion to the Candle Bible Handbook, with newly commissioned maps.

Engraving The Savage written by Michael Gaudio and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Art categories.

In 1585, the British painter and explorer John White created images of Carolina Algonquian Indians. These images were collected and engraved in 1590 by the Flemish publisher and printmaker Theodor de Bry and were reproduced widely, establishing the visual prototype of North American Indians for European and Euro-American readers. In this innovative analysis, Michael Gaudio explains how popular engravings of Native American Indians defined the nature of Western civilization by producing an image of its “savage other.” Going beyond the notion of the “savage” as an intellectual and ideological construct, Gaudio examines how the tools, materials, and techniques of copperplate engraving shaped Western responses to indigenous peoples. Engraving the Savage demonstrates that the early visual critics of the engravings attempted-without complete success-to open a comfortable space between their own “civil” image-making practices and the “savage” practices of Native Americans-such as tattooing, bodily ornamentation, picture-writing, and idol worship. The real significance of these ethnographic engravings, he contends, lies in the traces they leave of a struggle to create meaning from the image of the American Indian. The visual culture of engraving and what it shows, Gaudio reasons, is critical to grasping how America was first understood in the European imagination. His interpretations of de Bry’s engravings describe a deeply ambivalent pictorial space in between civil and savage-a space in which these two organizing concepts of Western culture are revealed in their making. Michael Gaudio is assistant professor of art history at the University of Minnesota.

The End Of The Historical Critical Method written by Gerhard Maier and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-12-27 with Religion categories.

The historical-critical method of biblical interpretation has dominated theological thinking for over two centuries. It has been the subject of much controversy, including the turmoil in American Lutheranism. But now the historical-critical method has Òcome to a dead end.Ó So says Dr. Gerhard Maier, author of the original version of this work. Maier points out that the emphasis in the historical-critical method has consistently been on the critical rather than the historical. He goes on to delineate the Òhistorical-biblicalÓ method he feels will be needed in the future. Such a method takes history seriously but allows for God's supernatural intervention in human affairs. Here Edwin Leverenz and Rudolph Norden present the English translation of Maier's manuscript, while Eugene Klug's preface places the study into the setting of today's theological debate. The End of the Historical Critical-Method is ÒmustÓ reading for theologians. Yet it also serves as a help to all who have been searching for guidance in combating rationalism in the approach to theology.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Some of the instructions look daunting, but as Child herself says in the introduction, 'If you can read, you can cook.'" —Entertainment Weekly “I only wish that I had written it myself.” —James Beard Featuring 524 delicious recipes and over 100 instructive illustrations to guide readers every step of the way, Mastering the Art of French Cooking offers something for everyone, from seasoned experts to beginners who love good food and long to reproduce the savory delights of French cuisine. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry
