Las mil y una noches (en árabe, Alf layla wa-layla) es una célebre recopilación medieval en lengua árabe de cuentos tradicionales del Oriente Medio, que utiliza en estos la técnica del relato enmarcado. El núcleo de estas historias está formado por un antiguo libro persa llamado Hazâr afsâna («mil leyendas»). El compilador y traductor de estas historias folklóricas al árabe es, supuestamente, el cuentista Abu Abd-Allah Muhammad el-Gahshigar, que vivió en el siglo IX. La historia principal sobre Scheherezade, que sirve de marco a los demás relatos, parece haber sido agregada en el siglo XIV.Causó gran impacto en Occidente en el siglo XIX, una época en que las metrópolis impulsaban las expediciones e investigaciones geográficas y de culturas exóticas. Aunque Las mil y una noches se tradujo por primera vez en 1704, esa primera versión al francés, de Antoine Galland, era una adaptación, un texto expurgado de los adulterios y hechos de sangre que abundan en el libro. Una de las traducciones que alcanzó popularidad fue la de Richard Francis Burton, diplomático, militar, explorador y erudito de la cultura africana.Compuesto por tres grupos de relatos, el libro describe de forma fantástica y algo distorsionada la India, Persia, Siria, China y Egipto. Hacia el año 899, los relatos, transmitidos oralmente, habían sido agrupados en ciclos. Se cree que muchas de las historias fueron recogidas originariamente de la tradición de Persia (hoy en día Irán), así como de Irak, Afganistán, Tajikistán, y Uzbekistán, y compiladas más adelante, incluyendo historias de otros autores.El libro ha sido adaptado muchas veces para uso de niños y adolescentes en todos los países de Occidente. Generalmente, se eligen para su difusión los relatos en los que prevalecen las aventuras y la fantasía. Por otra parte, narradores occidentales impactados por el libro imitaron su estructura de relatos engarzados. El escocés Robert Louis Stevenson es autor de Las nuevas noches árabes, que en realidad son una colección de relatos extraños ubicados en Londres.
