Nos hemos propuesto relatar á nuestros lectores todas las maravillosas leyendas de las tradiciones árabes de la Alhambra. Revolviendo un dia unos antiguos papeles encontrados en un desvan en una casa del Albaicin, hallamos uno que se decia traslado del arábigo al romance, de una historia árabe en que se esplicaba la causa por qué de tiempo en tiempo durante la noche, solia oirse un tristísimo suspiro saliendo por los brocales de los algibes de la Alhambra y muy semejante al gemido de un espíritu condenado. La traduccion, aunque pesada y hecha bajo el mal gusto literario de la mayor parte de los prosistas españoles del siglo XVII, es tan bella en el fondo, tiene tal sabor oriental, que no hemos podido resistir al deseo de intercalarla entre las leyendas tradicionales é históricas referentes á la Alhambra. Es un asunto fantástico; en él figuran hadas, conjuros y encantamentos, y aunque es un tanto embrollado y oscuro nosotros hemos procurado darle claridad. Este cuento ha sido inspirado sin duda á algun poeta moro por la Alhambra, porque los árabes siempre buscan á las cosas que les impresionan por bellas ó por terribles un orígen maravilloso. Antes de empezar á trascribir el cuento que llamaremos El alma de la cisterna, debemos describir esta cisterna que aun existe hoy con el nombre de los Algibes de la Alhambra.
