This book is about my beloved Liberia and the Liberian people who have endured a lot from a centuries-old leadership that failed miserably to provide opportunity, development and progress to a people and country. While it is so true that successive Liberian leaders failed to provide the competent and visionary leadership it takes to move the country forward, the blame for such failure cannot be thrown on Liberian presidents alone. The Liberian progressive and the so-called intellectual class are also to blame for helping to drag Liberia into the mud and backwardness to satisfy their own selfish political and financial gains. Instead of forcing the hands of the political ruling class to account for rampant corruption, negligence and their gross leadership failures that continue to dehumanize the Liberian people and threaten the survival of Liberia as a civilized nation, the intellectual class or progressives continue to conveniently align themselves with those painfully inept and corrupt leaders to pillage the country. As these progressive intellectuals ignore the After 169 years of Independence, there are barely electricity and modern roads and streets and running sewer in Liberia, or in major communities in the country. The nation's health care and school systems are in disarray. The President of Liberia still manipulates the legislative and judicial system, as if we are still living in the Tubman era. With all these national problems starring at us, most Liberian intellectuals and ?progressives? are mainly concerned with the presidency and whom to put in the Executive Mansion. This strategy ? a survivalist one, perhaps is intended to put these individuals in a position to return to Liberia to work in government if their candidate wins the presidency. We can still have our presidential candidates and still focus on building institutions ? strong institutions, so that the next president will not capitalize and manipulate the bad policies that plunged Liberia into dictatorship, poverty, war, and underdevelopment.

"Child soldiers are among the most tragic victims of the war in Liberia. Although international law forbids the use of children under the age of 15 as soldiers, thousands of young children have been involved in the fighting since it began in December 1989. The main rebel forces, the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) and the United Liberian Movement for Democracy in Liberia (ULIMO), have consistently used children under the age of 18, including thousands under 15. Children are also reportedly used by the other warring factions. As a consequence, thousands of children in Liberia have suffered cruelly during the war: many have been killed or wounded or witnessed terrible atrocities. Moreover, many children themselves have been forced to take part in the killing, maiming or rape of civilians. The use of children as soldiers presents grave human rights problems. Many of these children have been killed during the conflict, thus denied the most basic right -- the right to life. Others have been forcibly conscripted by the warring factions, and separated from their families against their wills. Many have joined warring factions to survive. All have been denied a normal childhood. Reintegrating these children into their communities is a task of immense difficulty. Some children's parents have been killed, their families have fled, and no relatives can be found. In others, families have refused to take children back because of the abuses they have committed. Human Rights Watch believes that 18 is the minimum age at which people may properly take part in armed conflict."--cover.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist teams up with a noted political commentator. For everyone who loves to hate the Bush administration and is ready to laugh about it! Ambushed! recounts the exploits of the Bush administration, at home and abroad, 2001 to 2008, through the lens of a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for the Miami Herald and the analysis of a leading political scientist at Boston University and Harvard University. The book begins with the ways in which American voters were ambushed in two presidential elections and ranges widely among the ensuing disasters from Enron to Katrina to the budget deficit to the economy and finally to the "global war on terror" that lost America many friends and inspired enemies worldwide. Contrasting the Bush administration's lofty promises with its policy failures-from Baghdad to New Orleans-the book suggests that this has been not only the least effective but the most destructive presidency of the past century.

What do refugee and concentration camps, prisons, terrorist and guerrilla training camps and prisoner of war camps have in common? Arguably they have all followed an 'outsides inside' model, enforcing a dichotomy between perceived 'desirable' and 'undesirable' characteristics. This separation is the subject of Møller's multidisciplinary study.

Liberia written by John-Peter Pham and has been published by Reed Press(NY) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

"In this utterly depressing account of the west African nation's history and politics, scholar and diplomat Pham offers a cautionary tale regarding Western intervention in Africa. Colonized by free American blacks in the early 19th century, Liberia has long been beset by tensions, not only among its native populations but between natives and the descendants of its Western colonizers. But Pham is no knee-jerk blame-the-West critic- far from it. As he points out, Western investment, by Firestone and other rubber companies, "served as the principal catalyst for Liberia's infrastructure." The author does, however, acknowledge that the workers were paid little for the labor that enriched the rubber companies, and that tribal chiefs were given a cut for the toil of their villagers. Liberia's worst times have come in the past two decades, with rampant corruption and civil war. In Pham's eyes, nation-states have failed, in Liberia and elsewhere in Africa, for a variety of reasons: tribal and ethnic tensions and the end of the Cold War, which allowed weak states propped up by the superpowers to tumble. Pham argues that these states must take responsibility for their own reconstruction and reconstitution as democratic nations, without Western intervention, if they are ever to emerge from their current struggle"--from Publisher's Weekly, quoted on amazon.com.

Liberia was the scene of two devastating civil wars since late 1989 and became widely considered a failed state. By contrast, the country is frequently described as a success story since the international professional Ellen Johnson Sirleaf assumed the presidency following democratic elections in 2005. The book investigates the political economy of civil war and democratic peace and puts the developments into historical perspective. The author argues that the civil wars did not represent the breakdown of the state but exhibited dynamics characteristic of state formation. His analysis of continuity and change in Liberia's political evolution details both political progress and persistent structural deficits of the polity. Book jacket.
