Translating Culture Specific References on Television provides a model for investigating the problems posed by culture specific references in translation, drawing on case studies that explore the translational norms of contemporary Italian dubbing practices. This monograph makes a distinctive contribution to the study of audiovisual translation and culture specific references in its focus on dubbing as opposed to subtitling, and on contemporary television series, rather than cinema. Irene Ranzato’s research involves detailed analysis of three TV series dubbed into Italian, drawing on a corpus of 95 hours that includes nearly 3,000 CSR translations. Ranzato proposes a new taxonomy of strategies for the translation of CSRs and explores the sociocultural, pragmatic and ideological implications of audiovisual translation for the small screen.

Ma l'uomo che per natura è ipocrito e finto, non dice già «io voglio conquistare per distruggere», ma, «io voglio conquistare per incivilire». La ricerca si basa su colloqui in profondità somministrati a 386 donne di età compresa fra i 18 ed i 45 anni che al momento della rilevazione vivevano da sole per ragioni non legate a cause contingenti e di forza maggiore (come succede a suore, vedove, divorziate, separate, studentesse pendolari ecc ...), ma presumibilmente collegate a opzioni di emancipazione, di liberazione e di autonomia personale all'interno di logiche di libertà e di responsabilità verso se stesse. Le interviste-colloquio sono state condotte negli anni da studentesse della facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell'Università di Bologna. E all'area bolognese si riferisce il campione analizzato. Esso non presenta possibilità di comparazione nel contesto nazionale - in materia la letteratura è molto scarsa e quasi sempre orientata in chiave teorico-astratta o ideologico-filosofica - ma apre comunque un primo, vigoroso spiraglio sul tema. Le donne che tendono a vivere da sole (e che a livello nazionale costituiscono più o meno l'1% dell'intera popolazione femminile) risultano essere di fatto una sorta di élite sociale: molto istruita rispetto alla media della popolazione (più di un quarto è laureata), concentrata nella fascia di età 26/35 anni (oltre il 60%), occupate nell'area impiegatizia o libero professionale (non sono emerse operaie o simili). I saggi che costituiscono il volume danno conto della frammentazione dell'oggetto di analisi e della poliedrica, frastagliata ed estremamente articolata identità sociale delle donne studiate. Ogni saggio si occupa di un aspetto particolare. Nell'ordine, vengono toccati i seguenti aspetti: identità relazionale e psicologica delle donne single; immagine che le intervistate hanno del loro padre e della loro madre; concezione dell'amore, della sessualità e dell'amicizia; atteggiamento verso la maternità; senso religioso; posizioni politiche; il lavoro, il tempo libero ed il lavoro domestico; vivere sola: scelta o necessità?
