A Origem Histórica do Pentecostalismo irá nos mostrar de forma sucinta toda a trajetória desde o Antigo Testamento até os dias atuais sobre o significado da palavra Pentecostes, consequentemente sua estruturação como um movimento religioso como conhecemos hoje. Muitos cristãos, principalmente os Pentecostais, não sabem a história do cristianismo, e consequentemente não sabem a história da sua Igreja, muito menos como se originou ou quais são seus fundadores. Por isso fiz um breve histórico de um movimento religioso protestante que revolucionou o mundo. No primeiro capítulo veremos o significado e o sentido original da festa de Pentecostes descrita no Antigo Testamento, onde era simplesmente uma das três festas anuais que Deus estabeleceu para o povo Judeu. No segundo capítulo veremos similarmente como a festa de Pentecostes passou a significar após a decida do Espírito Santo, pois até então a festa tinha um significado diferente. Os pentecostais atuais se apropriam de desse episódio para defender sua tese do batismo com o Espírito Santo, relatado em Atos 2. O capítulo três vai falar sobre os avivalistas que revolucionaram o mundo nos séculos XVI ao XIX através da pregação do arrependimento e salvação. Eles foram os percursores do pentecostalismo moderno, pois influenciaram os pregadores pentecostais. O capítulo quatro vai nos mostrar a origem e o desenvolvimento do pentecostalismo nos Estados Unidos, onde pregadores norte-americanos foram influenciados pelos avivalistas. Os EUA também foi berço do pentecostalismo moderno, onde na rua Azuza, Califórnia, o mundo foi incendiado com a chama do evangelho. No capítulo cinco veremos a chegada do movimento pentecostal no Brasil, vinda dos Estados Unidos, seu estabelecimento como denominação, onde ganhou espaço na sociedade, cresceu e se expandiu. No capítulo seis verificaremos historicamente algumas igrejas pentecostais no Brasil, nos quais foram as iniciantes no processo de evangelização e de seus líderes que tiveram grande papel em desenvolver o Ide de Jesus Cristo. Convoco os cristãos em geral de toda a procedência, pentecostais, carismáticos, reformados e tradicionais a fazerem uma reflexão sobre este trabalho espetacular.

Propõe-se neste estudo analisar e interpretar o processo tenso de conversão ao pentecostalismo, especialmente a experiência particular de "bandidos" que se tornaram pregadores e utilizam suas histórias de vida como "testemunhos" do poder de Jesus Cristo na operação de milagres. Por meio do contraste entre testemunhos antigos e recentes, analisa-se como os conteúdos da conversão religiosa se modificam no contexto de uma nova configuração de modernidade e sociedade. Em outro ponto da análise, considero como os dois termos ordenadores das narrativas de transformação de vida - o sentido e a ética - tornam-se referências declinantes nos testemunhos recentes, impregnados de alusões fantásticas ao diabo e seu séquito de demônios. Por último, investigo os limites das estratégias do proselitismo do movimento pentecostal no combate à violência criminal, considerando em que condições se assenta a carreira emergente de pregação, vislumbrada como saída da desordem para os sujeitos pobres, desesperados e criminosos, cuja posição marginal no campo religioso se constitui como carreira "itinerante" e instável, em estado permanente de liminaridade.

The explosive growth of Pentecostalism has radically transformed Latin America’s religious landscape within the last half century or so. In a region where Catholicism reigned hegemonic for centuries, the expansion of Pentecostalism has now resulted in a situation of religious pluralism and competition, bearing much more resemblance to the United States than to the Iberian motherlands. Furthermore, the fierce competition from Pentecostal churches has inspired significant renewals of Latin American Catholicism, most notably the growth of a Catholic Charismatic movement. However, another and more recent source of religious pluralism and diversity in Latin America is an increasing pluralization and diversification of Pentecostalism itself and of the ways in which individual Pentecostals exercise their faith. By carefully exploring this diversification, the book at hand breaks new ground in the literature on Latin American Christianity. Particular attention is focused on new ways of being Pentecostal and on the consequences of recent transformations of Christianity for individuals, faith communities and societies. More specifically, the chapters of the book look into certain transformations of Pentecostalism such as: theological renewals and new kinds of religious competition between Pentecostal churches; a growing political and civic engagement of Pentecostals; an observed de-institutionalization of Pentecostal religious life and the negotiation individual Pentecostal identities, composed of multiple intra- and extra-ecclesial points of identification; and the emergence of new generations of Pentecostals (children of Pentecostal parents), many of whom have higher levels of education and higher incomes than the previous generations within their churches. In addition, Catholic responses to Pentecostal competition are also addressed in several chapters of the book.
