In Liberty of the Imagination, Edward Cahill uncovers the surprisingly powerful impact of eighteenth-century theories of the imagination—philosophical ideas about aesthetic pleasure, taste, genius, the beautiful, and the sublime—on American writing from the Revolutionary era to the early nineteenth century. Far from being too busy with politics and commerce or too anxious about the morality of pleasure, American writers consistently turned to ideas of the imagination in order to comprehend natural and artistic objects, social formations, and political institutions. Cahill argues that conceptual tensions within aesthetic theory rendered it an evocative language for describing the challenges of American political liberty and confronting the many contradictions of nation formation. His analyses reveal the centrality of aesthetics to key political debates during the colonial crisis, the Revolution, Constitutional ratification, and the advent of Jeffersonian democracy. Exploring the relevance of aesthetic ideas to a range of literary genres—poetry, novels, political writing, natural history writing, and literary criticism—Cahill makes illuminating connections between intellectual and political history and the idiosyncratic formal tendencies of early national texts. In doing so, Liberty of the Imagination manifests the linguistic and intellectual richness of an underappreciated literary tradition and offers an original account of the continuity between Revolutionary writing and nineteenth-century literary romanticism.

Using your imagination is so much fun! It can take you on new and exciting adventures. I wrote this poem, when I was 17, for an assignment for English class. Thirty years later, I turned it into a book called I’m Awful Glad I’m Not A Bug. It has now been remastered with the illustrations done by my daughter, Zoe McMann.

Taking seriously Spinoza's claims that truth is the standard of both itself and the false and that imaginative thought is in itself true, this dissertation is an inquiry into the truth of imaginative freedom, that is, an explanation of its causes and, more importantly, its effects on life. The Spinozan imagination is a power by which the human being can be disempowered and so I seek to explain what the imagination can do. Starting from the Spinozan image, the thought and affect born of the arrant encounters of the individual in the infinite relation of nature's immanent self production, I identify the logic of the imagination, or the mechanisms by which it orders and connects images, in the Cartesian and Hobbesian configurations of freedom. Defending each thinker against the charges of inconsistency or incoherence, I treat Descartes and Hobbes's images of freedom as models of the operations of imagination, especially the damaged lives these images engender. In explaining that Cartesian self determination is produced by the presenting and hypostatic mechanisms of imagination and guaranteed by the anthropotheological mirror of divine and human freedom effected by the appropriative mechanism, we are forced to see that Cartesian freedom is not, as Spinoza puts it "of use for life," but disempowers through absolute blame, an image of freedom that limits freedom to the will and separates power from efficacy. In explaining that Hobbesian freedom from impediment is produced by the exclusionary mechanism of the imagination, we are forced to countenance the lupine sociality born of Hobbes's refusal of the incommon between individuals.Because, as Spinoza puts it, imaginative freedom is the greatest affect of all (E5p5), the critique of imaginative freedom serves to create the affective conditions for overcoming freedom "without others" and realizing the collective empowerment necessary for true freedom.

Excerpt from The Pleasures of Imagination Sources of his ideas. He sat down to this work, which was published at the early age of three and twenty, warm from the schools of ancient philosophy, whose spirit he had deeply imbibed, and full of enthusiasm for the treasures of Greek and Roman literature. The works of no author have a more classic air than those of our Poet. His hymn to the Na'iads shows the most intimate acquaintance with their mythology. Their laws, their arts, their liberty, were equally objects of his warm admiration, and are frequently referred to in various parts of his Poems. He was fond of the Platonic philosophy, and mingled with the splendid visions of the Academic school, ideas of the fair and beautiful, in morals and in taste, gathered from the writings of shaftes bury, hutcninson, and others of that stamp, who then very much engaged the notice of the public. Educated in the university of Edinburgh, he joined to his classic literature the' keen discriminating. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
