Excerpt from Library Printing Thus 10 point on 12 point body will produce the same effect as 10 point with 1 point leads. Styles (or faces) of types are variously classified. A convenient, though not strictly accurate division is: (1) script, (2) roman (both old style and (3) italics, and (4) ornamental or display. The first and fourth classes are seldom appropriate for library use ex cept for title pages, headings, book plates or material in tended primarily for purposes of publicity. Roman, the type ordinarily used in English and Ameri can books, is understood unless other styles are partien larly indicated, (e. G. The direction 12 point heads means Print headings in 12 point Old-style roman is a direct imitation of the sturdy type designed by William Caslon on Jenson's earlier models and used in English and American books in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its letters have heavier and less angular lines than the modern roman based on styles designed by Bodoni and others. Modern roman was very commonly used in England and America till the last decade of the nineteenth century. At present old style or Caslon and similar styles are the most com mouly used types for general purposes. Several styles in common use are modifications of old style, e. G.. Cheltenham, Kenilworth (which closely resembles Chelten ham) and Scotch Roman. Each of these has its correspond ing italic face. Modern roman is still rather frequently used and its prototype, Bodoni, is coming to be used again frequently for special publications in fine arts and belles lettres and, in its larger sizes, for museum labels. When heavier faces are desired Bookman (or Old Style Antique), Cloister Black, Caslon Bold and Cheltenham Bold are good faces for library work. Excerpt from A Cheap Library Post You enter upon one of the most important fields of action in the intercourse of nations. You are promoting an eminent work for their peace and their prosperity, stephan, at Postal Union Congress. Facilities for intercommunication take from human life its isolation and bind the race together in one family. Transcontinental railways, ocean steamship lines, subma'rine cables, international postal systems strengthen old and create new human ties. The social organ ism, the moral and spiritual unity of the race become more than the dream of poet or prophet. The postman thus ranks among the social reformers. As he passes over land and sea, knowledge, commerce, charity, friendship, brotherhood go with him. He blazes a path through the wilderness and bears the torch of a better civilization over the earth. Campbell. The New England Education League, whose object is to promote more equal educational opportunities, so far as possible, for all New England, has regarded the library as an important educational agency and has advocated more equal library privileges wherever practicable. To secure house-to-house delivery of books in cities and large towns and to open central libraries to out lying areas ou an equitable plan of library support, and by suitable carriage of library books, are believed to be in the interest of libraries and education, and contributory to social progress which both library and school are designed to advance. Printing For Profit Classic Reprint written by Charles Francis and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-31 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from Printing for Profit In these days this would be called the psychological side of printing, but to me it was simply plain common sense. Good paper, clear type, neat arrangement, sharp impression and full count are only details lead ing to an end, and if that end is lost sight of the most beautiful specimen of art printing may be a failure. The printed program for a concert is obviously wasted if delivered when the concert is half over, and while the manufacturer's need for a catalog may be less specifically tied to a day and hour, yet he may be a much greater loser by delay; hence it is apparent that delivery on time is quite as important as delivery of good quality of workmanship. It is not expected that the mere reading of these pages will enable a printer to turn a loss into a profit; the work is not published with any promise of serving as an infallible guide to success. The purpose is sim ply to record some of the principles and experiences which enabled the writer to build up a large business from the smallest sort of beginning. Excerpt from The Art and Craft of Printing Except in the case of Blunt's Love Lyrics, The Nature of Gothic, Biblia Innocentium, The Golden Legend, and The Book of Wisdom and Lies, a few copies of all the books were printed on vellum. The six copies of The Glittering Plain were printed on very fine vellum obtained from Rome, of which it was impossible to get a second supply as it was all required by the Vatican. The vellum for the other books, except for two or three copies of Poems by the Way, which were on the Roman vellum, was supplied by H. Band of Brentford, and by W. J. Turney Co. Of Stourbridge. There are three complete vellum sets in existence, and the extreme difficulty of completing a set after the copies are scattered, makes it unlikely that there will ever be a fourth. The black ink which proved most satisfactory, after that of more than one English firm had been tried, was obtained from Hanover. William Morris often spoke of making his own ink, in order to be certain of the ingredients, but his intention was never carried out.
