Excerpt from A Synopsis of the North American Lichens The arrangement of this book is that of the author's Genera Lichenum, 1872; and the few variations from this will, it is hoped, explain themselves. The plants described are, in great part, sufficiently well settled; and the new things appear to demand an at least provisional place: though the author would have preferred to keep the most of these last back, with Horace, nonum in annum. And this not merely from hesitation as to the novelty or the rank of the lichens referred to, but because he entertains strongly the opinion that the science of Lichens - whether as regards morphology or system - has by no means kept pace, since Fries's day, with the diagnostic enumeration of new forms called arbitrarily species; and he is sorry to have possibly added to the number of these constructions. Agreeably to the wishes of the friends who have urged an early publication, this part of the work, comprising the more conspicuous lichens, is printed first. Excerpt from Lichens of Southern California The large class of Lichens has comparatively been given but scant attention by botanists, although their study is not less devoid of interest than that of other Cryptograms or of Phanerograms possessed of greater exterior attractiveness in contrast to the modest Lichen in unassuming garb, persistently toiling in obscurity with tenacious vitality and achieving important results in vegetable economy by preparing sterile soil or hardest rock for the ultimate support of more pretentious plants. With the object of attaining greater recognition for these humble plants by students of California Botany, this preliminary list is presented. Without the patient and disinterested assistance and advice of Dr. W. Nylander, who named the undescribed and classified difficult species, the compilation of this list could not have been accomplished. As it is it gives but a tithe of the interesting Lichens of this part of the State, but it is hoped that an enlargement of this report will be made if possible. From 1925 to 1927 the writer assisted Professor Fink in the study of material and the writing of descriptions. This assistantship was financed by combining fellowship grants from the Society of Sigma Xi, grants from the American Associa tion for the Advancement of Science, and grants from Miami University. Grants were received by the writer from the Society of Sigma Xi in 1928, 1929, and 1930, and from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1928. After the death of Professor Fink in 192 7, the writer became an instructor in the Botany Department of Miami University and continued work on the manuscript.
