Jahrhunderts, die Relativitätstheorie und die Quantenphysik, sind eng mit der Suche der Antwort auf die Frage „Was ist das Licht“ verknüpft. Wie schwierig deren Beantwortung ist, lässt sich an einem berühmten Zitat Einsteins festmachen: „Den Rest meines Lebens werde ich darüber nachdenken, was Licht ist!“ Doch nicht nur Albert Einstein dachte über das Licht nach. Mit optischen Phänomenen haben sich schon im Altertum viele Wissenschaftler beschäftigt. Jedoch blieb die Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Wesen des Lichts im Dunkeln. Wie kann man sich das Licht vorstellen? Diese Frage lässt sich nicht in einigen Sätzen beantworten. Wie haben sich bedeutende Wissenschaftler das Licht vorgestellt? Durch welche Überlegungen gelangten sie zu ihren Theorien? Was sind die Probleme dieser Lichtmodelle? Wie wird nach heutigem Wissen das Phänomen Licht erklärt? Inhaltsangabe --------------------------------------- 1) Antike Vorstellungen von Licht Seit Anbeginn der Zeit haben sich die Menschen mit dem Licht als Naturgewalt auseinandergesetzt und diese in Verbindung mit religiösen Mythen als göttliche Kraft interpretiert. Jedoch gab es auch wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit diesem Phänomen. Den Griechen des Altertums waren schon wesentliche Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Strahlenoptik geläufig. 2) Die Entwicklung der Optik als Wissenschaftsdisziplin Bis Anfang des zweiten Jahrtausends blieben diese Vorstellungen bestehen, erst der Araber Alhazen widerlegte die Theorie der „Sehstrahlen“ experimentell. Sein Werk „Opticae Thesaurus“ bildete das Fundament der damaligen Optik. Seine Leistungen waren seiner Zeit weit voraus. 3) Licht – Welle oder Teilchen? Isaak Newton war überzeugter Anhänger der Korpuskulartheorie. Sie besagte, dass das Licht aus kleinsten Teilchen, den sogenannten Korpuskeln, besteht. Diese Theorie fand aufgrund seiner Popularität großen Anklang und konnte erst 150 Jahre später widerlegt werden. Während Christian Huygens noch scheiterte,verhalf Thomas Young der Wellentheorie mit seinem Doppelspaltexperiment zum Durchbruch. 4) Der Übergang zur Quantenmechanik Das Doppelspaltexperiment, wenn durchgeführt mit einzelnen Photonen, zeigt grundlegende Prinzipien der Quantenmechanik und somit der Natur des Lichtes. Die Photonen verhalten sich je nach Experiment und dessen Bedingungen mal als Welle mal als Teilchen. Daraus ergibt sich der sogenannte Welle-Teilchen-Dualismus.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Astronomy, grade: 1,0, University of Bremen, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: An adaptive mesh refinement simulation of galaxy cluster formation was performed that included the passive evolution of a magnetic field. It was found that structure formation plays an important role in amplifying large-scale magnetic fields and that the magnetic properties of the obtained cluster were in good agreement with recent observations. The initial field was amplified by a factor of up to 1000 during the formation of the cluster, and the field strength was seen to be well correlated with the gas density. We further found a magnetic energy power spectrum that is well described by -5/3 Kolmogorov-type turbulence. Near the accretion shocks on the outskirts of the cluster, the magnetic field is amplified well beyond the value expected from mere compression of gas. Here, shear flows lead to a substantial increase in field strength. Realistic Faraday rotation measures were obtained from the simulation data, which was however not resolved well-enough to allow for a more quantitative analysis.

This study of ancient Egyptian art reveals the evolution of aesthetic approaches to proportion and style through the ages. The painted and relief-cut walls of ancient Egyptian tombs and temples record an amazing continuity of customs and beliefs over nearly 3,000 years. Even the artistic style of the scenes seems unchanging, but this appearance is deceptive. In this work, Gay Robins offers convincing evidence, based on a study of Egyptian usage of grid systems and proportions, that innovation and stylistic variation played a significant role in ancient Egyptian art. Robins thoroughly explores the squared grid systems used by the ancient artists to proportion standing, sitting, and kneeling human figures. This investigation yields the first chronological account of proportional variations in male and female figures from the Early Dynastic to the Ptolemaic periods. Robins discusses the proportional changes underlying the revolutionary style instituted during the Amarna Period. She also considers how the grid system influenced the overall composition of scenes. Numerous line drawings with superimposed grids illustrate the text.
