This book offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the precolonial to colonial transition in an urban context, by focusing on the changing distribution, character and role of public spaces and buildings. The volume focuses on three case study regions: East African coast, North-West Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula. The regions are selected to provide a novel perspective on the socio-spatial impact of colonialism on the public life of urban settlements, driven by different political forces, in different geographical contexts and time periods. The three study areas are also linked by sharing several features of urban lifestyle such as the role of trade and the influence of religion, Islam in particular. The intertwined influence of socio-spatial urban characteristics on public life is presented on a range of case studies selected from Africa and southern Europe. The approaches are rooted in archaeological thinking on the built environment as material culture and incorporate critical interpretation of ethnographies and historical accounts on both the precolonial and colonial eras. "En raison, notamment, de leur poids démographique et de leur volonté de revendiquer un statut de citoyens actifs, les jeunes sont apparus de façon spectaculaire dans l'espace public africain depuis les années 1990. Bien qu'ils soient un élément essentiel à la compréhension des dynamiques sociales face à l'érosion des engagements de l'État et aux transformations de la famille, il apparaît incontournable d'étudier les jeunes en relation avec les autres groupes d'âge. C'est ainsi que l'analyse des dynamiques intergénérationnelles en Afrique prend toute son importance afin de rendre compte des changements qui ont cours depuis la moitié du XXe siècle. Ce livre s'inscrit donc dans une tendance récente de la recherche qui montre un regain d'intérêt pour l'étude des générations et de l'intergénérationnel en Afrique. La notion de génération n'est toutefois pas nouvelle dans l'analyse des dynamiques sociales en Afrique, notamment si l'on se réfère à l'écrit fondateur de Karl Mannheim, Le problème des générations (1928), dans lequel il invite à mettre en évidence "tous les changements dus à la dynamique historico-sociale" pour bien cerner les éléments de changements liés au facteur de génération. La perspective adoptée dans ce livre est de voir comment les apports intergénérationnels se modifient, comment la légitimité des aînés peut être rediscutée et comment les jeunes tentent d'échapper aux difficultés et aux contraintes. Ce regard a conduit les auteurs à trouver de nouveaux lieux pour observer les jeunes mais aussi des espaces communs aux différentes générations. Dans cet ouvrage, ils mettent en avant les continuités et les discontinuités des lieux de conflits et de négociations, ainsi que les stratégies de coopération qui marquent les rapports entre les générations. Alors que les villes d'Afrique sont encore trop fréquemment considérées avec condescendance comme des territoires oubliés de la modernité, les sociétés citadines du continent participent à bien des égards à la vie du monde, que ce soit en termes d'accueil ou de circulation d'individus, d'idées ou d'objets. Bien loin de considérer ces villes comme des "provinces du monde", ce livre s'attache à en montrer le dynamisme, appréhendé à travers les migrations internationales qui conduisent des centaines de milliers de gens du monde entier à vivre ou à circuler en Afrique urbaine. Le livre s'intéresse au cosmopolitisme méconnu et pourtant ancien des villes d'Afrique au Sud du Sahara, processus ravivé dans le cadre de la mondialisation depuis les années 1990. De ces mobilités et échanges naissent des phénomènes de créolisation, qui se traduisent dans l'alimentation, l'architecture ou les ceuvres d'art. Des lieux de sociabilité se développent : certains sont directement inspirés de modèles internationaux standardisés, d'autres sont créolisés localement et investis par tous les citadins, d'autres encore sont prisés pour l'exotisme d'un décor colonial de nouveau à la mode. Les pratiques de sociabilité signalent un goût prononcé des habitants pour ces lieux cosmopolites, ce qui n'empêche pas des tensions identitaires de se manifester. Les citadins développent de nouveaux imaginaires et un nouvel exotisme, tournés vers l'ensemble du monde, qui témoignent de l'ouverture culturelle des sociétés urbaines.

This book uses empirical research to bring together a broad range of protest contexts in twelve chapters. From the formation of Maroon societies in the early colonial period, to female mobilisation in authoritarian contexts, via urban youth culture, women or mineworkers in trade unionism, as well as pro- and anti- gay rights activists, the protagonists here all insist upon their rights to protest in a variety of ways. Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram. Cet ouvrage regroupe un éventail comprenant douze contextes de contestation.
