From the first half of the seventeenth century, missionaries of the Society of Jesus ministered to the free and enslaved populations of the French Caribbean colonies. Amongst their number were Jean Mongin (1637–1698) and Claude Breban (1695–1735), whose letters vividly depict the experience of the evolving colonial world. Writing from Martinique, and Saint Kitts (Saint-Christophe), Mongin describes his attempts to convert Protestants, his ministry to the populations of slaves and their mistreatment by colonists, as well as concerns with unorthodox spiritualities. Breban depicts the rhythms of life in the burgeoning slave colony of Saint-Domingue, with the distinctive cultural and linguistic practices – and cruelty – of its plantation environment. Mongin and Breban’s letters reflect debates about the transatlantic slave trade, and the nature of human difference, and testify to the cultural and social environment of early Creole societies. The letters in this volume are an unrivalled source of information about the lives of enslaved people in the early modern French Caribbean. Transcriptions of manuscripts in French are accompanied by facing-page translations into English and notes.

In 942 it was the site of a massacre by Japanese forces of over 150 unarmed Australian troops. This is the life story of one of those unfortunate Australians, caught up in the events at the start of the War in the Pacific. It is the story of a thoroughly decent man who saw it as his duty to 'join up' and do his bit for his adopted country. As time marches on, the name of Tol Plantation will lose its association with the horror of the events of 1942. It is however a story that needs to be retold. Whilst the nations of the world have so far avoided another World War, World Peace seems as unattainable as ever.

One day in 1852, The Princess, one of the finest steamboats afloat on the Mississippi River one hundred years ago was rounding the bend a Duncan�s Point about ten miles below Baton Rouge, when the boilers exploded with a frightful loss of life. The disaster occurred in front of the Conrad cottage where a descendant, the late G. Mather Conrad, of New Orleans, was born and lived as a youth. Lyle Saxon in his Old Louisiana tells of having known an old gentleman who remembered the awful holocaust. Then a little boy, this old gentleman was awaiting the return of his mother and father from New Orleans. He saw the Princess come around the bend and then turn in toward the bank. As he watched he heard a terrific explosion and saw the steamboat burst into flames. Mr. F. D. Conrad, plantation owner of that generation, so Saxon tells us, sent his slaves out in skiffs to rescue the men and women who crew struggling in the water. Many of them were frightfully scalded by steam from the broken boilers. Sheets were spread on the ground under the oak trees on the lawn and barrels of flour were broken open and the contents poured on the sheets. As the scalded people were pulled from the river, they were stripped and rolled in the flour, where they writhed and shrieked in agony. The little boy went from one sufferer to another seeking his father and mother. They were not there. They returned from New Orleans on a later boat, but he never forgot the anguish of his search.

How global competition brought the plantation kingdom to its knees. In 1850, America’s plantation economy reigned supreme. U.S. cotton dominated world markets, and American rice, sugarcane, and tobacco grew throughout a vast farming empire that stretched from Maryland to Texas.
