My book is about my life from childhood to now. It looks at the difficulties and traumatic experiences i went through in my childhood - sexual and physical abuse,and not being protected by those who were supposed to look after me and love me. I try to give comfort to those who may have been in a similar situation to mine.I'm writing this book, telling the whole world of my suffering and pain i experienced as a child - sexual abuse, physical abuse, pain that i have locked up inside for years. Revisiting my past whilst writing this book has been extremely painful and has filled me with tears in some chapters. It has always been my desire to tell my story so that people know that despite all the pain i experienced and although i may still be damaged psychologically, i managed to overcome this and have a balanced life. As a child, i had no one to tell about my suffering. I was that child that no one wanted to know or to speak to.There may be people out there who are suffering in silence like i did and may be scared to talk to someone. I hope that this book will inspire and counsel them and encourage them to do something about it. I hope that my book will help those affected to move on with their lives like i did.

Homelessness is usually discusses in terms of its origins or in terms of its amelioration. Media accounts focus on poverty, drug use, lack of shelter, the social safety net, or attempts by the homeless, social service agencies, and government to end homelessness by policy and direct action. Yet we never seem to get a clear picture of who the homeless are. We are exposed to them as a social problem, but we learn little about their daily existence. In Something Left to Lose, Gwendolyn A. Dordick gives us a dramatic portrait of the social and personal lives of the homeless. Through her extensive "hanging out" with homeless people, Dordick came to a profound understanding of the web of relationships that provides complex social structure in situations where, to the casual eye, there appears to be only chaos and paralysis. The author shows us that improvising shelter means working hard to co-exist with others. Lacking conventional private dwellings, the homeless find or create shelter in unconventional places -- on street corners adjoining bus stations, on empty lots of land, or in shelters, public or private -- and negotiate the rules of these places with authorities, passersby, and fellow homeless. The different environments lead to quite different social relations. The Armory, for example, is a frightening place, thanks to the authoritarian attitudes of the employees and cliques of homeless people in charge. In the Shanty, on the other hand, the difficult issues are those of a self-governing community concerned about safety -- controlling the drug use of some residents, deciding who is allowed to tap into the electricity, and worrying about intruders. In all settings, daily life for people without homes, like daily life for people with homes, if full of the concerns of personal relationships. How will we share our goods and emotions, speak respectfully to each other, love and joke and work out our disputes, and act in a trustworthy fashion? This book is also a miniature research odyssey, complete with moments of fear, frustration, blunders, distrust, and trust. In order to gather these interviews, Dordick had to not only win the the confidence of the homeless people she visited (the women at the Station thought she was interested in their boyfriends) but also negotiate with unsympathetic police and shelters employees or defy them.

Life on the streets is very hard. Between 2016 and 2017, I spent an entire year as a homeless person on the streets of Rome. This short manual, or guide, is a more or less detailed account of the experiences I had during this time and the "skills" I learned there to survive in a hostile and sometimes ruthless environment, where dangers are always lurking around the corner and present themselves whenever you least expect them. I hope it will come in handy both as a "handbook" for those who in the course of their existence should find themselves having to walk this sad and dangerous path; and for those who want to understand what it really means to live on the streets in the 21st century. This is not an official handbook or guide, like a programming manual or one on Army tactical warfare. It has a personal slant and is somewhere between an account of my experiences and a list of practical, common sense advice that would be useful to keep in mind if you find yourself in that sad condition of life. It is not a list of addresses or emergency phone numbers (which though is provided at the end of the guide) when an attempt to share what I learned during that long year spent in Rome in 2017. Hence my idea to publish it in three languages (English, German, and Italian), so that it may also be useful to a broader, international audience, as I did previously with my essay "The Yoke." Undoubtedly the "street" is also a school of life, but it is a hard school, sad and from which one often never returns to normal life, as it is easy to be sucked into what I would like to define as a parallel dimension of existence that beyond a certain threshold no longer has any connection with the "normal" world. It is a dimension in which I, at times, was also happy, if I may use this term, in that I was relieved of the burden of bourgeois existence, made up of debts, bills to pay and commitments to fulfill, ending up even seeing glimmers of a more authentic existence, thus confirming the Gospel teaching on poverty and simplicity. I, on the way, was at times "freed" from my slavery to money and success, and saw things in a different light that made me feel freer than I do now in my daily life as a writer and translator. Having said that, I don't want to make here either an apologia for poverty or a suggestion to undertake this life because it is not chosen, but imposed by chance and often by misfortune, and of course I am careful not to say that it is a life like any other or better. Absolutely not. Nor do I think I will ever return to it, as that would be profoundly wrong and immoral. Those who can, have the right and the duty to do what is possible to climb the slope and return to the world of men, but this does not mean that even those who lead the nomadic and stray life of the homeless out of sad necessity, among a thousand hardships, deprivations and dangers, do not also have the opportunity to be, if not happy, at least perhaps somewhere and at some time truly free.

The hardest part about surviving, is fear of the unknown. This book is intended to help you do that. Military and civilian survival courses start by charting a path into the unknown. This is useful. Knowledge and experience can calm anyone facing a crisis. A range of people fall into the ranks of the homeless, with variation in resource access. There is a very simple, though not easy solution to homelessness: build affordable housing. The government has allowed housing costs to get way beyond what they should be. When my father got his first apartment, being married, in 1958, he paid 15% of his income for rent. Nowadays, people pay more than 30%, and some, over 50%, which is ridiculous. While we wait for politicians to wake up, which may take forever, homeless people have to survive, somehow. If cities had the lockable sleeping booths that Japanese train stations have, with space enough to sleep and keep a duffel bag, that would help greatly. Few people plan to end up homeless. Yet even some middle-class folks have had to deal with it. A number of celebrities had periods of homelessness. Homelessness has affected a broad range of society. It also generates a subconscious fear, which can drive compulsive behavior. This book assumes the reader is without regular lodging, in a city or town. Wilderness survival is very different from urban survival. Perspective is everything. A major catastrophe for one person can be an adventure for another. Most homeless people seem to be on what Joseph Campbell called the Hero's Journey. Read at least the Wikipedia notes on that, so you have meaning for your life. Disasters, including arson, blizzards, brush fires, chemical spills, civil unrest, hurricanes, mudslides, power outages, radiation leaks, tornadoes, water mains breaking, water shortages, and wells going dry can change one's lifestyle drastically. In my area, the power was out, after a storm, for 10 days. We slept in a shelter, visiting the apartment only during the day. We started it on a full tank of gas, and after 5 days, we were able to fill up again. We also had water. We ate the perishables quickly, before they went bad. I was very glad I had extra blankets. If you anticipate a problem, why not practice surviving for days, even weeks, with just the supplies on your back? Or just a weekend, here and there? Then adapt that to an urban environment, in a sort of roving home lifestyle. You could call this being an urban nomad, as you get what you need, but just in a wider range. It would be useful to do this prior to being homeless, when one still has resources. An alternative might be to attend wilderness survival courses. Wilderness survival requires a higher skill set, which is easily adapted to the urban environment. Think of this as an adventure. Maybe you won't ever be homeless. The confidence, foreknowledge, and peace of mind, from practicing, will benefit you greatly. Your mind will seek out paths to survive, and prosper, instead of wallowing in fear. You will realize you can survive a winter outside. Reindeer herders in Siberia live and sleep outside, in -40 F. weather. If they can do it, with some animal skins, you can survive under less harsh conditions. Lesser problems, like a furnace breaking down, seem much smaller. Backpacking and camping are a lot easier, and more fun. You'll see much more. Soldiers have slept outside, in winter, and yes, even Russian winters, often with inadequate gear, and have for a few thousand years. They did it. Think of yourself as a scout, or a nomad, doing non-central, distributed living, which at least makes you feel better. The Navy SEAL lesson is to ignore what you can't control, list what you can control, prioritize, and deal with these, one at a time, no matter how tired one is. This is a good life lesson.
