Excerpt from Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 1 In the year 1771, the sixty-fifth of Franklin's life, when he was spending some pleasant weeks of the summer at the country house of his friend, the good Bishop of St, Asaphs, he began to write an account of his early life, in the form of a letter to his son, the Governor of New Jersey. When he had written twenty-three sheets, which brought down the narrative to the time of his marriage, in his twenty-sixth year, his holiday ended, and he was drawn again into the whirlpool of politics. Thirteen years passed before he was able to continue the work. At Passy, in 1784, the independence of his country having been secured, he was urged by friends who had read or heard of the unfinished Autobiography, to go on with it. He wrote one more chapter at Passy. Resuming the narrative, four years later, at Philadelphia, he continued it to bis fifty-first year, when he had arrived in England as agent for Pennsylvania. He had both leisure and strength to complete the work, but, as he approached the time of his more conspicuous public life, his modesty took the alarm, and he could not prevail upon himself to relate occurrences which, if they were related truly, would oblige him to present himself as the central figure in important public scenes. He ceased to write when he had just related his entrance upon the European part of bis career. He sent a copy of what be had written to his old and valued friend, M. Le Veillard, of Passy, who, a year or two after the death of Franklin, permitted part of the manuscript to be translated into French and published in Paris. It was translated back into English, and published in London in the year 1703, and continued to circulate in this form, in England and America, for twenty years. Excerpt from The Writings of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 1: Collected and Edited With a Life and Introduction The writings of Benjamin Franklin have been several times published. It is nearly ninety years since William Temple Franklin completed the long delayed edition of his grandfather's works; it is seventy years since Jared Sparks began the publication of his ten laborious volumes; and it is almost twenty years since Mr. John Bigelow prepared what then seemed to be the final edition of Franklin's works and correspondence. W. T. Franklin's edition is no longer of the slightest value to the student of history. He was devoid of literary facility, and was overwhelmed by the magnitude of his task. In his work there is neither sense of proportion nor judgement in selection. Jared Sparks, by unwearied industry, rendered a great service to American history, and preserved from oblivion many historical papers of the highest importance; but he was disloyal to his author, and took liberties with his documents. He corrected and altered at pleasure. In an attempt to give a classic pose to his heroes, he revised spell ing and grammar, and omitted passages which he deemed beneath the dignity of history, and gave no sign withal that he had tampered with either style or substance. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin, L. L. D. F. R. S, Vol. 1 The Editor, in ofl'ering this justificatory plea to the public, and taking credit for having exercised so much discretion as to keep these relics in his private custody, till the return of halcyon days and a brightened horison, when their true value might be best appreciated, feels that he has discharged his duty in that manner which the venerable writer himself would have prescribed, could he have anticipated the disorders which have ravaged the most polished and enlightened states since his removal from this scene bf pride and weakness; where nations as well as individuals have their periods of infancy and decrepitude, of moral vigor and wild derangement. Excerpt from Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 2 England had lost her colonies, though no one yet suspected it. Madness now seized both parties; only there was method in the madness of the colonists. It is not ours to relate the public events which accompanied and followed the scenes just described such as the destruction of the tea in Boston harbor; the passage of Lord North's avenging measure, called the Boston Port Bill; the adop tion of the cause of Boston as their own by the other colonies; six regiments of British troops posted in Boston; the calm protests of Washington, Lee, and Jefferson; the Wild eloquence of Patrick Henry; the passage of the bill transferring political offenders to England for trial, with their train of Witnesses and advocates; the torrents of petitions against these measures; the haughty rejection of these petitions; the tumults in America; the exasperating inso lence of the king's speeches to Parliament; and, above all, the meet ing of the Continental Congress at Philadelphia. All these things have been eloquently told by Mr. Bancroft, and are familiar to decently informed persons in every land. America became the uni versal topic, France appearing to be more interested in it than England, though there Were in Parliament fifty field-night de bates upon America during the next three or four years. In contact with the air, within as well as without. Dr. Franklin had been on the point of the same discovery.
