England In The Mediterranean written by Julian Stafford Corbett and has been published by Cosimo, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-01 with History categories.

In this 1917 work, the first volume of his exhaustive study of the rise of British power in the Mediterranean, Corbett focuses on British naval influence during the Stuart period. By dwelling on battles not fought as much as on those that were, he is able to show how "events which seemed but the most trifling episodes appear as links in a mighty chain." This unique take on a neglected part of English history is indispensable to anyone interested in British naval power in the years between the death of Elizabeth and the Peace of Utrecht. SIR JULIAN STAFFORD CORBETT (1854-1922) was a prominent British naval historian and geostrategist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose works helped shape the Royal Navy's reforms of that era. He also wrote The Campaign of Trafalgar, The Seven Years War and Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, which remains a classic among students of naval warfare.

Excerpt from A Life of Richard Badiley: Vice-Admiral of the Fleet The reason for this forgetfulness may be that the enterprise in which Badiley held the chief command, and around which public interest at the time most centred, was not, in the event, successful. While Blake was establishing the naval supremacy of Eng land ih the war against the Dutch, Badiley was endeavouring to defend her interests in the Medi terranean Sea. In this attempt he was overpowered by superior force, and, after a gallant struggle, he was driven out of the Straits. The defeat was for the time so decisive that the peoples of the Medi terranean seaboard, both Christian and Turk, looked upon the English as an undone nation. The Dutch flag for a short time flew triumphantly in the Mediterranean. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The history of Oliver Cromwell’s short-lived Commonwealth is a tale of regicide, dictatorship, internal conflict and war in seventeenth-century Britain. After defeating King Charles I in the English-British Civil Wars, Oliver Cromwell established the Commonwealth of England. Under this unique experiment in the governance of Britain, the Three Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland were united in the Protectorate, with Cromwell as Lord Protector, 1649 to 1660. But this ambitious new state would soon collapse. Cromwell faced turbulence and problems from all sides. There were political, religious, and constitutional dilemmas at home and military threats from abroad—even from the Dutch, the Protectorate's natural ally. Finally, with Cromwell's death in 1658 and succession of his son, the hapless Richard Cromwell, the 'failed state' collapsed with the restoration of the Stuart dynasty in 1660. Thus Britain returned to royal, aristocratic and gentry rule.
