This creative thesis is an exploration of and reflection on my childhood experiences as a Syrian American growing up in the United States. I explore themes of cultural connection, double consciousness, ethnicity in America, and the preservation and loss of Syrian cultural practices including language, family relationships, and social norms. Growing up in a predominantly white community, as the daughter of a Syrian immigrant raised in a Syrian community, I was acutely aware that I didn't fit in with the larger culture around me. I engaged in code switching, absorbed micro-aggressions, and experienced othering without any real understanding of what was happening. Studying race and social justice concepts at Portland State University helped me clarify and contextualize my childhood experiences. I wrote this collection of stories to amuse, educate, and enlighten people about Syrian culture and to highlight the inner life of our immigrant community. In doing so, I learned about myself and how I have processed my place within my Syrian community and within my country of birth, the United States.

Inside Syria - A Physician's Memoir is a street level view of Syria from 1965 that is far more nuanced than most reports in the US media. Tarif Bakdash, MD, was born and raised in Syria. He went to school with Bashar al-Assad, worked with Bashar's wife Asma, butted heads with Ba'ath Party bureaucrats, lost friends to anti-Islamic purges.Tarif Bakdash shows us history from the inside-in the life of a child, a student-a young man struggling to create a life for himself. And then he shows it to us again, in the eyes of a middle-aged MD who, after many years in the US, returns to the city of his birth as an impatient American intent on reforming the Syrian system from within.

Muslims Of The Heartland written by Edward E Curtis IV and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-15 with History categories.

Uncovers the surprising history of Muslim life in the early American Midwest The American Midwest is often thought of as uniformly white, and shaped exclusively by Christian values. However, this view of the region as an unvarying landscape fails to consider a significant community at its very heart. Muslims of the Heartland uncovers the long history of Muslims in a part of the country where many readers would not expect to find them. Edward E. Curtis IV, a descendant of Syrian Midwesterners, vividly portrays the intrepid men and women who busted sod on the short-grass prairies of the Dakotas, peddled needles and lace on the streets of Cedar Rapids, and worked in the railroad car factories of Michigan City. This intimate portrait follows the stories of individuals such as farmer Mary Juma, pacifist Kassem Rameden, poet Aliya Hassen, and bookmaker Kamel Osman from the early 1900s through World War I, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, and World War II. Its story-driven approach places Syrian Americans at the center of key American institutions like the assembly line, the family farm, the dance hall, and the public school, showing how the first two generations of Midwestern Syrians created a life that was Arab, Muslim, and American, all at the same time. Muslims of the Heartland recreates what the Syrian Muslim Midwest looked, sounded, felt, and smelled like—from the allspice-seasoned lamb and rice shared in mosque basements to the sound of the trains on the Rock Island Line rolling past the dry goods store. It recovers a multicultural history of the American Midwest that cannot be ignored.

This is a street level view of Syria from 1965 that is far more nuanced than most reports in the US media. Tarif Bakdash, MD was born and raised in Syria. He went to school with Bashar al-Assad, worked with Bashar's wife Asma, butted heads with Ba'ath Party bureaucrats, lost friends to anti-Islamic purges. Tarif tells his story: a nurturing childhood in a warm family -- against fear of war, the maiming of his mother, jailing of a schoolmate for no reason, the blood-soaked ground of Hama in 1982, omnipresent security services, Soviet-style thinking, old-fashioned graft, and official doubletalk. Tarif Bakdash shows us history from the inside -- in the life of a child, a student -- a young man struggling to create a life for himself. And then he shows it to us again, in the eyes of a middle-aged MD who, after many years in the US, returns to the city of his birth as an impatient American intent on reforming the Syrian system from within.

This book has a special effect that draws the attention of senses and led the mind to search beyond the words of the author. Memories of a young woman shaped her life and vision of the future to challenge the contraries in order to realize the progression. Contraries is not a belief in opposites but rather a belief that each person reflects the contrary nature of the reaction, and that progression in life is impossible without contraries. Simple words describe the events of her memories that every time reacts to what is hidden behind these words, is a deep call for freedom and the rights of each individual to select his/her life regardless of the meaning of external factors such as religion and social norms. She is calling for happiness and joy. There is a major difference between happiness and joy. Happiness in life is transitory, dependent on circumstances. Joy continues regardless of trials. The book encourages the young to work for realizing their objectives and stand the difficulties may they face, at the same time let the grown-up enjoy the success of a young girl move from one continent to another and establish stability and enjoy happiness overcoming all difficulties. The author has a wealth of knowledge and experience waiting for her great successes in her future books. --Dr. Nizar Sofani
