Life Cycle Assessment is a scientific methodology to assess the environmental impact of a product, system or service along its life-cycle. This starts with the extraction of raw materials; follows with the manufacturing, distribution and use stages; and ends with the treatment of waste or byproducts. All this information allows us to avoid transfer of burdens between life cycle stages, geographical regions or environmental impact categories. For example, reducing the amount of material to manufacture a product (i.e. a washing machine, a car or a wastewater treatment plant) while not increasing energy consumption during its use or consumption.\nIn September 2012, from the 3rd to the 7th, the Laboratory of Environmental and Chemical Engineering (LEQUIA) and the Institute of the Environment of the University of Girona organized the 12th International Summer School for the Environment (ISSE) focused on “Life Cycle Assessment and Water issues”. It was framed within the European project Ecotech-Sudoe (www.ecotechsudoe.eu). Following the Lisbon Strategy, the research project Ecotech-Sudoe aims to merge sustainability and competitiveness. Ecotechnologies are powerful tools to achieve this, while providing the same level of service but with lower environmental and social impacts. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out to evaluate the environmental impact of a wastewater treatment plant (natural lagoon) located in Ain-Taoujdate city in Morocco. ReCiPe midpoint 2014 (H) method was used to assess the impact using ACV4E software. The study aims to analyze the ecological footprint of the plant, by identifying and comparing between the different phases of the life cycle.Construction and operation phases were assessed, only the decommissioning phase was not included. The LCA results of Ain Taoujdate WWTP showed discharges and emissions phase had a considerable impact on the first scenario, then the second scenario which was carried out as a fictitious aerated lagoon plant showed the operation phase wish has electricity as main source, was predominated over the other impacts. This shows that the last scenario would be suitable, if renewable energies are used as an alternative source, since aerated lagoons are known for their high purification performance compared to natural lagoon.

This thesis presents a general model for the carbon footprints analysis of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. In previous research, the issue of global warming is often related to traditional industries with high carbon dioxide (C0 2) emissions, such as power plants and transportation. However, the analyses of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have drawn increasing attention, due to the intensive greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from WWTPs. WWTPs have been listed in the 7 th place for both methane (CH 4) and nitrous oxide (N2 0) total emissions. In addition, WWTPs indirectly contribute to a huge amount of CO2 emissions. The final results have shown that more than half of the carbon footprints from the La Gavia WWTP are from the indirect emissions of C0 2, which is caused by the intensive energy consumption. The direct emissions of CH4 and N20 combined contribute more than 30 percent of GHG emission. The finally section of the thesis compares the environmental impacts of the La Gavia WWTP with case of no WWTP at all. It has been concluded that although the La Gavia WWTP increased the total carbon footprints, it has much better control of eutrophication potential (EP).
