A thorough transdisciplinary archaeological study of the ancient Egyptian Theban rock-cut tombs at Sheikh ‘Abd al-Qurna In recent years, archeological research has undergone major changes. The material turn in archaeology and related disciplines prompted the adoption of sophisticated scientific, digital, and technical approaches and methods often conducted on a micro level, enhancing our understanding of depositional processes and of the creation and life of an archeological object. This volume reflects seven seasons of transdisciplinary archaeological research at a cluster of rock-cut tombs in Sheikh 'Abd al-Qurna, an ancient Egyptian hillside cemetery and part of the much larger Theban Necropolis. Organized in twelve main chapters, Life Histories of Theban Tombs presents current investigations in landscape archaeology (including recent excavations at a large debris hill previously covering a tomb), geo- and bioarcheology, the archaeology of tomb construction, burial practices, and domestic uses as well as various epigraphical, visual, and material studies. The last two sections provide additional insight into the applied recording, surveying, and visualization methods and techniques and the database system used for data recording and organization. His independent means as the son of a wealthy banker enabled Alexander Henry Rhind (1833-63) to devote his short life to antiquarianism. While reading for the Scottish bar, he studied and investigated Pictish remains, and pressed for the inclusion of archaeological sites in Ordnance Survey maps. On developing tubercular symptoms, he gave up his legal studies and passed the winters from 1855 to 1857 in Egypt, where he made the important studies and excavations recorded in this 1862 book. He focuses on the necropolis of Thebes, and in particular on the unplundered tomb of an eighteenth-dynasty official. Putting his work into the wider context of the history of ancient Egypt and the importance of the city of Thebes, he also describes the reuse of the necropolis ruins as homes for modern Egyptian peasants and as the centre of a thriving trade in antiquities, both genuine and forged.

Until their recent demolition, the colorful mud-brick hamlets of al-Qurna village, situated among the Noble Tombs of the Theban Necropolis on the Luxor West Bank, were home to a vibrant community. Inhabiting a place of intensive Egyptological research for over two centuries, it was inevitable that Qurnawis should become part of the history of Egyptology and the development of archaeological practice in the Theban Necropolis. But they have mostly been regarded as laborers for the excavation teams or dealers in the illicit antiquities trade. The modern people inhabiting the ancient burial grounds have themselves rarely been considered. By demonstrating the multiplicity of economic activities that are carried out in al-Qurna, this study counters the villagers' stereotypical representation as tomb robbers, and restores an understanding of who they are as people living their lives in the shadow of valued cultural heritage.

"The majority of the papers in this volume were originally presented at an international conference held at the British Museum in July 2000, and reflect the current state of research on many aspects of the site. Subjects covered include the history of the necropolis at different periods, the value of archives and the history of conservation, tomb decoration, the use of specific areas of the necropolis, and certain types of material which are ubiquitous in excavations." "Not forgotten are the important issues of site management and striking a balance between caring for the monuments and responding to the needs of the modern inhabitants of the area. This book also indicates the direction that research might take in the future."--BOOK JACKET.

Excerpt from A Topographical Catalogue of the Private Tombs of Thebes Some errors of judgment have occurred: thus 180 does not deserve a number. A large number of tombs seen and noted by Champollion, Lepsius and others have not been rediscovered, and no mention of these will be found in this book. It is intended later on to publish a larger volume giving a full account and bibliography of all the Theban Private Tombs, whether these have been located or not, and to this further work the reader must be referred for whatever he misses here. In the interests of accuracy it has been sought to exclude such tombs as could not be investigated and verified; the gradual way in which the list has been compiled is responsible for the retention of a few tombs that form exceptions to this rule, such as 34, 47 and 146, none of which has been entered by me. Certain other tombs, the exact location of which is known, have been omitted for the reason that I have been unable to visit them. Thus in the same court as 19 is the tomb of Pyiay discovered by M. Gauthier (bulletin llmtitut fmnpaz's, VI, pp. 148 this is at present blocked up. The numbers employed in this Catalogue are the same as will be found marked outside the actual tombs; it is greatly hoped that these will meet with general acceptance. It will be noted that the numbering follows no topographical order. It will pain the pedantically-minded - I confess it is not wholly pleasant even to myself - that, for example, tomb 42 should adjoin 110, and access be had to 145 from 17. Such incongruities are for the most part due to the succession in which the tombs were discovered; in practice they do not in any way impair the utility of the numbering. The purpose in assigning numbers to the tombs is to provide a series of abbreviations to be used in_quotation, and so long as the numbers given are easily referred to in a printed Catalogue it matters little what order they follow. Any attempt to modify our numbering at the present juncture would introduce serious confusion into the already somewhat chaotic literature of Egyptology. Scholars are therefore begged to make Shift with it, whatever its imperfections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
